Francis W. Shanley (1939 – 2014)
RED HOOK—Francis W. Shanley, 75, a longtime resident of Red Hook passed away Thursday, July 24, 2014 at his home surrounded by his loving family.
Born March 9, 1939 in Rochester, he was the son of the late Francis and Marjorie (Pulver) Shanley.
Mr. Shanley married Katherine “Kay” Pease October 31, 1958 at St. Christopher’s Church in Red Hook. She survives at the family home in Red Hook.
For many years, Mr. Shanley worked as a technician at Ferncliff Nursing Home in Rhinebeck. Previously he also worked as caretaker for Mr. and Mrs. John Smithers and also at the Red Hook Post Office.
Mr. Shanley was a longtime member and active volunteer at Christ Church in Red Hook. He also was a member of the Red Hook-Rhinebeck Lodge 2022 BPOE in Red Hook.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by: his loving children, Marjorie Shanley of Red Hook, Julia DeGregoria/Jennifer Leale of Red Hook, Norman (Lisa) Shanley of Elizaville and Melissa (Albert) Ottman of Red Hook; his grandchildren, Sean Manna, John DeGregoria, II, Jessica DeGregoria, Tiffani Shanley, Sydney Ottman, and Ashley Ottman; his step-grandchildren, Charles Nicolich, Jennifer Nicolich, Ashley Nicolich, Kaleigh Borneman and Ryan Borneman.
He is also survived by: his brothers, Allan Shanley of Rhinebeck, Norman Shanley of Nevis and Clarence Shanley of Hyde Park and a step-brother, Thomas Scism of North Carolina and countless extended family and friends.
Mr. Shanley was predeceased by a daughter, Frances Joan Shanley and three brothers, Martin, Douglas and Joseph Shanley.
Friends may call at the Burnett & White Funeral Homes Sunday, July 27, 2014 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be held Monday, July 28, 10 a.m. at Christ Church in Red Hook. The Reverend Ryan Lesh will officiate. Burial will be at St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery, Red Hook.
Memorial donations may be made in Mr. Shanley’s memory to the Christ Church, 7423 South Broadway, Red Hook 12571.

Clare Marie Leverone Carman (1931 – 2014)
PITTSFIELD, MA—Clare Marie Leverone Carman of County Route 7A, Copake passed away July 23, 2014 at the home of her daughter.
Born February 16, 1931 in the Boston, MA, area, she was the daughter of James and Agnes Leverone.
She was predeceased by her husband, Harold W. Carman, Sr., and by her son, Harold W. Carman, Jr.
She and her husband lived in Riparius, NY, for a number of years before moving to Copake.
She was an avid horsewoman, owning many horses, and was a member of the New York State 4-H and the New York State Horse Council. She participated in yearly 100-mile horse rides.
Mrs. Carman was also an active community member. She served on the fire company’s ladies auxiliary and was a member of the historical society. She organized many town events, provided service for volunteer organizations and held safety training for young snowmobilers at her home.
Mrs. Carman was also a talented artist, whose many paintings adorn the homes of friends and family. She also became quite skilled at the restoration of antiques, as well as the restoration of classic car interiors, as she assisted in the family businesses that she and her husband worked closely together on.
She is survived by: three children, daughter, Susan and husband James McGiffert of Phoenix, AZ, daughter Jane and husband Bernie Mack of Pittsfield, MA, and son, James and wife Bernadette of Castleton; also five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Gerald A. Smith (1942 – 2014)
CLERMONT—Gerald A. Smith, 72, of Clermont died Sunday, July 27, 2014 at his home.
Born March 10, 1942 in Richmondville, he was the son of the late Walter and Pauline (Lent) Smith.
He worked at Orchard Hills Farms in Red Hook, delivered the Daily Freeman, the Bulldog News and retired from Bard College, where he was a groundskeeper.
He was a member of the Red Hook Elks Lodge #6022.
On March 30, 1964 in Red Hook, he married Helen LaPierre, who survives.
Also surviving are: his three children, Melissa Lacey and Gerald Smith both of North Carolina and Richard Smith of Germantown: nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; four brothers, William of PA, Raymond of FL, Ronald of Cobleskill and Gordon of Milan; four sisters, Marjorie Sisson, Geraldine Bradley of Richmondville, Shirley Eiffert of Milan and Marlene Bressett of NC.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Walter, Jr., and Kenneth and a sister, Carol Wilson.
According to Mr. Smith’s wishes, there are no calling hours and services are private and at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are with the Yadack-Fox Funeral Home, 209 Main Street, Germantown.
Thomas L. Stickles, Sr. (1954 – 2014)
AUSTERLITZ—Thomas Stickles, Sr., 60, of Austerlitz, passed away July 26 at home surrounded by friends and family after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Hudson, May 14, 1954 to Charles and Lucy Stickles (Bishop), he lived his entire life in Columbia County.
He served during the Vietnam War era and was awarded a National Defense Service Medal.
Mr. Stickles was a past commander of Ghent VFW Post 5933, Ghent. He was employed as a machine operator at Wastequip in New Lebanon for the past 14 years. His favorite spots to spend time relaxing were at the ocean in Wells, Maine and Lake George.
He is survived by: his children, Angela DeBella of Lunenburg, MA, Kristina Eaton Foutch (Terry) of Chatham, Thomas L. Stickles, Jr., of Austerlitz, Chuck (Gina) Stickles of Ghent, Brian Stickles (Valerie Cunha) of Cohoes and step-son Justin Van Alphen of Rhode Island; his pride and joy, his grandchildren, Brianna, Alyssa, Paige, Cameron, Layden, Hunter and Olivia; his sister and brother-in-law, Pat and Bill Quinn, who raised him from a very early age after his parents passed away and with whom he resided in Austerlitz; his brother, Rodney Stickles, Sr., of Chatham; and his sister-in-law, Jeanette Stickles of Brockton, MA.
He also leaves behind his lifelong childhood friend and “pool hall” mate, Eugene Sweatt of Canaan; many nieces, nephews and friends.
He was predeceased by his parents; his sister, Shirley Stickles; his brother, Charles Stickles, Jr., his brother, Don Stickles; an infant son, Robert Stickles; several aunts and uncles.
Friends and family are invited to attend calling hours at the Wenk Funeral Home, 21 Payn Avenue, Chatham, Friday, August 1 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. A brief funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. followed by interment with full military honors at the Austerlitz Cemetery. A reception to celebrate Mr. Stickle’s life will be held immediately following the funeral at the Spencertown firehouse.
The family thanks his home care nurses; niece, Cathy Leonard and longtime family friend, Lori Weaver; also, the nurses on C5 at Albany Medical Center and oncologist Dr. Evangelist and her staff at NY Oncology Hematology of Albany Medical Center. Helen W. Hoysradt (1925 – 2014)
POUGHKEEPSIE—Helen W. Hoysradt, 89, a 61-year resident of Millerton, died peacefully at Vassar Brothers Medical Center, Monday, July 28, 2014.
Mrs. Hoysradt worked at the Wassaic Developmental Center in Wassaic prior to moving to Millerton in 1953. She then worked at Delson’s Department Store in Millerton for many years.
Born January 12, 1925 in Hudson, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Hersko) Wassie.
She was a graduate of Hudson area schools. On December 29, 1948 in Hudson, she married Melvin W. Hoysradt. Mr. Hoysradt died May 7, 2014.
Mrs. Hoysradt enjoyed bowling and swimming and was an avid reader. She also enjoyed trips to the casino with her friends. Mrs. Hoysradt was a member of the Millerton Presbyterian Church for more than 61 years and taught Sunday school at church for many years. She will be greatly missed by everyone who knew and loved her.
Survivors include: her sisters, Julia Shuman of Oswego and Margaret Peduzzi of Kinderhook; her sister-in-law, Mary Hoysradt of Millerton; several nieces and nephews and great-nieces, great-nephews and many friends.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Hoysradt was predeceased by three sisters, Mary Yagalla, Anna Tkatz and Liz (Betty) Pyneus.
Funeral services will take place Thursday, July 31, 2014, 10 a.m. at the Millerton Presbyterian Church, 58 Main Street, Millerton. The Reverend Carol Miller will officiate.
