STOCKPORT—Livingston State Police investigators charged Victor Orozco, 24, of Chatham with first degree rape and first degree burglary, January 8.
Mr. Orozco is accused of breaking into a Stockport residence January 7, holding the homeowner at gunpoint and raping her. The crimes were not random, according to State Police Senior Investigator Gary Mazzacano, who told The Columbia Paper that Mr. Orozco knew the victim.
The 22-year-old married mother of two young children was just getting home from work around 8 p.m., when she encountered a masked man brandishing a handgun waiting in her apartment, said the investigator.
Her two youngsters were present and witnessed the attack. The woman’s husband was out of town, Sr. Inv. Mazzacano said.
The woman called 911 after the suspect fled the scene.
She was able to give police a description of him and his vehicle and based on his voice, a possible lead on his identity.
Troopers tracked Mr. Orozco down at his home on Sutherland Road in Chatham a short time later.
The Greenport Rescue Squad took the woman to Columbia Memorial Hospital, where she was examined by a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE), according to the investigator.
The children went to stay with relatives.
All State Police and Sheriff’s Office patrols on duty were given a description of the suspect vehicle and assisted with finding the suspect.
Police seized the suspect’s vehicle and were in the process of getting a warrant to search it this morning (January 8). Sr. Inv. Mazzacano said police suspect the gun is inside.
The Troop K Forensic Identification Team processed the crime scene and Chief Assistant District Attorney Michael Cozzolino was also on hand.
Mr. Orozco was arraigned before Stockport Justice Harold Horner and sent to the Columbia County Jail without bail.
Anyone with any information about the case is asked to contact Sr. Inv. Mazzacano at (518) 851-2982.
