Police ask for witnesses to fatal accident

LIVINGSTON—A bicyclist was killed when he crossed in front of an oncoming pickup truck on Route 82, just south of the Bells Pond intersection April 30 at 2:55 p.m.

According to Livingston State Police Senior Investigator Gary Mazzacano, John Reale, 60, of Ancram was driving a Toyota pickup truck southeast through the intersection traffic light from Routes 9/23 to Route 82, when he glanced at his gas gage to see if he needed gas, then looked back at the road in front of him to see James McKenna, 39, of Livingston, riding a bicycle across the road right in front of him.

Mr. Reale slammed on his brakes, but could not stop before hitting Mr. McKenna on his bike.

Columbia County Coroner Dr. George Davis pronounced Mr. McKenna dead at the accident scene about 100 feet south of the light at the first entrance to the Bells Pond Xtra Mart store.

Ten to 15 minutes prior to the accident, witnesses had seen Mr. McKenna walking with his bike south on Routes 9H/23 near Bryant Farms, said Sr. Inv. Mazzacano.

Mr. McKenna was frequently seen on his bike in that area and was known to ride his bike back and forth to Hudson.

The State Police Accident Reconstruction Team, Livingston firefighters and Northern Dutchess Paramedics assisted at the scene.

State Police investigators ask anyone who witnessed the accident to call them at (518) 851-2001.
