GREENPORT-Ten Columbia County youngsters spent a week in July at the New York State Sheriffs’ Association Institute’s 2009 Summer Camp, according to a press release from Sheriff David W. Harrison Jr.

The kids traveled from the county Sheriff’s Office to Keuka Lake in the Finger Lakes Region of Yates County to attend the summer camp, which is designed to provide recreation and good citizenship programs.

This is the camp’s 33rd year of operation.

The Sheriffs’ Summer Camp is supported by the Sheriffs’ Association’s Honorary Members through their contributions and annual dues. Children from each county go to camp for free.

The camp was developed and is open each summer to boys and girls between the ages of 9 and 12, who may not be able to attend a summer camp or go on a summer vacation for economic reasons.

Camp programs are designed to create positive interaction between the campers and the sheriffs, deputies and counselors.

During their stay, the children see special exhibits and demonstrations presented by Sheriffs’ Offices from across the state.

Programs include: DARE, boat and bike safety, law enforcement equipment and technical demonstrations, archery competitions, a talent show for fun, water games, movies, a beach carnival, a regatta, campfires, snorkeling and canoeing.

Columbia County youngsters who went this year are Christopher Houston, Felix Paul III, Alexis Macchi, Michael Keller, Ernest Wright Jr, Alexander Tomaso, Katelyn Tomaso, John Jay VanKempen, Scott Ford and Devon Nye.

Columbia County residents Kathy and Chic Vanderweit again volunteered at the camp as they have in the past.

Rebecca Milone, the sheriff’s confidential assistant, was the county’s director for the summer camp this year and coordinated bringing the young people together.

Deputy Wendy Guntert served as a counselor and traveled to camp with the children.

The Columbia County Correction Officers Local 3828 donated $200 for supplies so that each child had what they needed for camp.

“Public donations to the New York State Sheriffs’ Association Institute provide a great opportunity for children from our county to go camp and have fun. It is a week they will remember for many years,” Sheriff Harrison said in a press release.

At the close of camp, all children were awarded a diploma for their participation in a week of good citizenship and law enforcement studies.
