Helmetless bicyclist injured in Valatie mishap

VALATIE–The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a personal injury pickup truck/bicycle accident that happened on Route 203, July 17 at 12:12 p.m.

   Michael W. Swift, 48, of Valatie, was driving east in his 2001 Toyota pickup truck when the passenger side of his truck was struck by a bicycle ridden by Jeffrey L. Olsen, 46.

   Mr. Olsen was headed west on the bicycle, traveling on the wrong side of the roadway and in the wrong lane, according to a press release from Sheriff David W. Harrison, Jr.

   The collision caused Mr. Olsen to fall off the bike in the road.  Mr. Olsen was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, deputies say.

   The Valatie Rescue Squad took Mr. Olsen to the Albany Medical Center for treatment of head injuries. Information about his current condition was unavailable.

   Captain David P. Bartlett, Sergeant John DeRocha, Deputy Peter Grzeskow and Investigator Patrick Logue investigated at the scene. Valatie firefighters also responded.
