Nellie Jones, 92, natural teacher shared her talents

SALISBURY, Conn.–Nellie M. Jones, 92, beloved mother of Cheryl E. Jones of Hillsdale and Jerry E. Jones of Chardon, Ohio, died peacefully at Noble Horizons November 1, 2009 with her devoted daughter at her side.

Born September 9, 1917 in Rosby’s Rock, W.V., where her parents were visiting her grandmother, she was raised in Cleveland, Ohio, and spent most of her adult years in the Willoughby-Eastlake area of Cleveland.   The eldest of 10 children of Henry and Etta Mae Leimkuehler, Mrs. Jones served as “nonny” to all of her younger siblings when her mother died an untimely death at age 42. Mostly self-taught, she excelled in domestic arts, making herself an expert seamstress, baker, cook, gardener and mother.

Mrs. Jones was blessed with a lovely alto voice and a natural talent for music. She loved popular American songbook jazz and could charm most people with long-forgotten lyrics to some funny jazz tune.  A natural teacher, she shared her talents generously without judgment and was loved dearly by all who knew her.

In addition to her children, she is survived by her sister Ethel, brother Howard, two grandchildren, Paul Jones and Stefanie Parker of Columbus, Ohio, and one great-grandaughter, Morgan Parker also of Columbus.  Her cherished husband, Edmond Gordon Jones, who was employed by the Cleveland Public Library, died in 1974.

Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, November  4,  from 5 to 7 p.m. at Peck and Peck funeral home  on Route 22 in Copake,  followed by a brief memorial service.  Funeral and burial will take place in Ohio on Saturday, November 7.
