GHENT—Three people were seriously hurt in a car crash on Route 217 near Schnackenberg Road, Saturday, January 2 at 11:20 p.m.
Sheriff’s Office Patrol Sergeant William Zincio and Deputy Kris Bauhoff were called to crash scene and upon arrival found a 2001 Dodge four-door sedan off the road, where it had struck a tree, Columbia County Sheriff David Harrison, Jr, said in a press release.
The car was driven by Matthew T. McKeon, 21, of Purdys, Westchester County.
Passenger Timothy S. Dwyer, 16, was sitting in the front seat and passenger Anthony Ghelarducci, 18, was a rear seat passenger.
A preliminary investigation indicates that Mr. McKeon was driving east at an unsafe speed and lost control of the car, which ran off the road and crashed into the tree.
Ghent firefighters called for assistance from Chatham firefighters with the Jaws of Life to extricate Tim. Mr. McKeon and Tim were wearing seat belts and back seat passenger Mr. Ghelarducci was not.
The Philmont and Greenport rescue squads took all three young men to Columbia Memorial Hospital, Mr. McKeon and Tim suffered head injuries and Mr. Ghelarducci complained of a back injury.
Tim was later transferred to the Albany Medical Center due to the seriousness of his injury, the sheriff said in the release.
Also on the scene for the Sheriff’s Office were Senior Investigator Kevin Skype and Investigator Anthony Brahm, the Sheriff’s Office Incident Scene Investigation Unit with Deputies Brendan Filli and Scott Leggett.
Assisting at the scene were Philmont Police Officers Owen Conway, John Sottile and Matthew Chase.
The accident investigation is continuing and charges are possible.
