Meadowgreens fire ruled accidental

W. GHENT–The fire that ravaged the Meadowgreens Restaurant at 1238 Route 9H, January 21 has been ruled accidental.

West Ghent firefighters were called to scene after a passerby spotted flames around 4:10 a.m.

Mutual aid was called in from six surrounding fire companies, and damage estimates topped $1 million. Due to the high dollar value of the loss, the state Office of Fire Prevention and Control was called in on the investigation along with the Columbia County Cause and Origin Team. Debris samples were taken to a lab for analysis.

West Ghent Fire Chief James Cesternino told The Columbia Paper that he received the summary report from the Cause and Origin Team, which categorizes the blaze as accidental and the area of fire origin to be in the northeast corner of the bar/lower dining room.

Due to the extent of the damage, exactly what caused the blaze cannot be pinpointed.

The primary owner of the restaurant and golf course is Carmine Nero, who bought the place with four partners about four years ago.

The establishment’s website says, “Like the Phoenix rising Meadowgreens is coming back” and lists the Columbia County Sno-Drifters’ NYSSA vintage snowmobile show, swap and drags Saturday, February 20, as an upcoming event. The golf course is set to re-open March 1, according to the website.
