COPAKE—A dead body was discovered off Main Street in the hamlet the morning of Saturday, March 20. Sheriff’s deputies and investigators were called to the scene at 11:24 a.m.
The body was discovered in a bushy, wooded area between the backyards of homes along Main Street and the Copake Cemetery, which is situated along side and behind the Copake United Methodist Church on Church Street.
People often walk their dogs in the area around the perimeter of the cemetery and youngsters were recently seen flying a kite in the area where the remains were found.

In a press release, Columbia County Sheriff David Harrison, Jr. said it is currently unknown how long the body has been there, but it appears to have been there for some time.
No further details were released by the sheriff, except that an investigation is continuing. Law enforcement personnel and the coroner were on the scene into the evening and had the area cordoned off with yellow crime scene tape.
A Copake man, John D. Picarello, 21, has been missing since December 1, 2009.
Mr. Picarello was reported missing by his father and was last seen at the Copake Pharmacy at about 2:30 in the afternoon that day. The pharmacy is located several hundred yards from where the body was found.
A missing person notice put out by the Livingston State Police in early January stated that Mr. Picarello was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, black pants and sneakers at the time of his disappearance.
There has been no confirmation from the sheriff about the identity of the body found or how the person might have died.
