Charles Rothermel, 70-year member, past chief, of Palmer Engine & Hose

KINDERHOOK–Charles W. Rothermel, 88, died Thursday, March 4, 2010 at his home.

Born in Kinderhook, September 19, 1921, he was the son of the late William and Mina (Leiser) Rothermel. Mr. Rothermel was a Chief Petty Officer in the U.S. Coast Guard during WWII and was a co-owner of C & E Rothermel in Kinderhook with his brother Edward.

He was a past Columbia County Fire Coordinator and a life member, past chief and president of the Palmer Engine & Hose Co. in Kinderhook for 70 Years. Mr. Rothermel was also the past president of the Columbia County Fireman’s Assoc., past president of the Columbia County Fire Chiefs Assoc., past president of the Silver Medal Club, a life member of the Hudson Old Time Power Assoc., a former member of both the Columbia Car Club and Automobilist Car Club and a past commander of the Kinderhook American Legion Post.

He is survived by his friend and companion of 35 years, Gertrude Duffield and her beloved family; two sisters, Dorothy Novak and Lillian Meiske; a brother-in-law, Fred Oles; and a sister- in-law, Virginia Rothermel, all of Kinderhook ; and many nieces, nephews, grand and great-grand nieces and nephews and their families. His wife, Helen (Trimper) Rothermel; a sister, Eva Oles; a brother, Edward Rothermel; and two nephews, William and Paul Rothermel died previously.

A graveside service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the Kinderhook Cemetery, with Rev. James Slater officiating. Relatives and friends may call Monday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Raymond E. Bond Funeral Home, Inc., Route 9, Valatie.
