PITTSFIELD– Marion Emily Radershimer Schmich, 90, of Melbourne Place, formerly of Stephentown Center, died Wednesday, May 12, at Berkshire Medical Center under the care of Hospice Care of Western Massachusetts.
Born in Albany November 11, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Walter E. Radenshimer, Mary Reynolds Radershimer Plunkett and step-daughter of the late Charlie Plunkett. She resided in Belleville, Ill. and Albany as a young child. She married her late husband, George P. Schmich, on February 25, 1937 and resided in Stephentown Center for over 60 years before moving to Pittsfield in 2000. Mr. Schmich died on July 19, 2001.
After starting their family, Mrs. Schmich was the postmaster for the Stephentown Center Post Office for over 30 years before retiring on August 29, 1980 (when the post office closed). In retirement, she and her husband traveled extensively out west to visit their sons. She was a member of the NAPUS organization until the time of her death. She enjoyed gardening, especially flowers, cooking, antiques and coin collecting.
Survivors include her children and their spouses Joan K. Schmich (Richard) Taikowski of Pittsfield, Georgiana M. Schmich (David) Russo of Voorheesville, Gerald W. “Jerry” (Jacqua) Schmich of Loveland, Colo., Carl R. (Tanya) Schmich of Saugus, Calif.; a nephew, Charles Janes of Boston, a niece, Kathleen Iannauntoni of Killington, Vt., a cousin Virginia Wittlich of Belleville, Ill.; and 14 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. A sister, Dorothy Janes, and a grandson, John E. Taikowski, died previously.
Funeral services will be on Monday at 11 a.m. from the Hall & Higgins Funeral Home, 457 NY 43, Stephentown where Rev. Trygve Tomlinson will officiate. Burial will follow in the Garfield Cemetery.
Relatives and friends are invited to the funeral home for visitation on Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m.
