VALATIE–Frederick W. Zander, 81, of Kinderhook, died Friday, May 28, 2010 at Barnwell Health Facilities.
Born in Brooklyn September 6, 1928, he was the son of the late Frederick and Catherine (Habekost) Zander. Mr. Zander was a sergeant during the Korean War in the U.S. Army and worked as a carpenter for the Fort Orange Paper Co. in Castleton until his retirement. Mr. Zander was a professional musician with several area bands and played at resorts in the Catskills and on WHUC radio in Hudson. He also volunteered his time playing the organ for Barnwell residents at church services there.
He was an avid camper and traveled around the northeast with his wife always bringing his keyboard for entertainment. He kept his love of farming throughout his lifetime end provided for his family with large gardens every year. He was a member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Valatie.
He is survived by a daughter, Nancy J. Zander of Valatie; three sons, Daniel Zander (Lidia) of Queensbury, Gary W. Zander (Robin) of Green Island and Mark R. Zander (Stacey) of Valatie; five granddaughters, Tara, Becky, Christy and Jenna Zander and Melissa (Justin) Barrett; and one great grandson, Logan Barrett. His wife, June K. (Hockemeier) Zander, and his sister, Evelyn Montie, died previously.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. from St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, Route 9, Valatie with Rev. James Slater officiating. Burial will be in Kinderhook Cemetery. Calling hours will be Tuesday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Raymond E. Bond Funeral Home, Route 9, Valatie.
