CANAAN– Brian “Webby” Webster, a 17-year-old Ichabod Crane High School student, drowned in Queechy Lake, Monday, July 5, at 7:52 p.m.

State troopers and investigators from New Lebanon and Kinderhook responded to the 911 call.

Brian was swimming with some friends in the lake when, according to witnesses, he began to struggle, then went under water, police report.

Boaters attempted to reach him but were unsuccessful.

Greenport Dive and Rescue Team (DART) personnel pulled Brian from the lake and cardiopulmonary resuscitation was performed. He had been underwater for about a half hour.

Canaan firefighters, Columbia County Emergency Medical Services and the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office also assisted at the scene.

Lebanon Valley Protective Services took Brian to the Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield, Mass., where he was pronounced dead shortly after 9 p.m. Preliminary autopsy results revealed no evidence of alcohol or chemical impairment, police said.

Brian would have been a senior at ICC High School in the fall. Interim School District Superintendent Lee Bordick said in a prepared statement: “The district is saddened by this tragic loss and offers its deepest condolences to the family and friends of Brian. We will continue to provide assistance to our staff and students affected by this tragedy.”

The school district has arranged for counselors to be available daily through Friday, July 9, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the high school to assist students and staff.
