Gertrude Derby, 88, bowler, Red Sox fan

HANCOCK, Mass.—Gertrude M. “Trudy” Derby, 88, formerly of Main Street, Hancock, Mass., died with her family by her side, Saturday, November 20 at Hillcrest Commons in Pittsfield, Mass., where she lived for four years.

Born in Hancock, Mass., July 7, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Roland Sherman and Mary LeBarron Sherman Bailey.

She was the loving wife of the late Grover “Frank” Derby, who died December 25, 1984. They were married August 6, 1939. She attended schools in Lanesborough and Pittsfield, Mass.

Mrs. Derby was employed for several years at Sweet Brook Nursing Home in Williamstown, Mass. She bowled at the former Lar-A-Bowl in New Lebanon and was an avid Red Sox fan.

Survivors include her seven children, Gerald W. (Dottie) Derby of Stephentown, Sherman L. (Sandra) Derby Sr. of Hancock, Mass., Pamela J. Curry of North Carolina, Ronald E. (Mary Ann) Derby and Letitia M. (Charles) Lahey all of Florida, Grover Paul (Helen) Derby of Pittsfield, Mass., Edward J. (Jan) Derby of Hancock, Mass.; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 24, 1 p.m. in the Hancock Baptist Church, Main Street. Burial will follow in the Hancock Cemetery.

Relatives and friends are invited to call Tuesday, November 23, 4 to 7 p.m.at the Hall & Higgins Funeral Home, 457 State Route 43, Stephentown. Contributions in memory of Mrs. Derby may be made to the Hancock Baptist Church, c/o the funeral home, P.O. Box 9, Stephentown 12168.
