Edna Smith, 97, Town Clerk, Grange master

GT. BARRINGTON, MA—Edna H. Smith, 97, passed away Saturday, March 26, 2011 at the Great Barrington Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.

She was born October 12, 1913 in North Hillsdale, the daughter of the late Charles and Caroline (Uzner) Hoffman.

Mrs. Smith served as Hillsdale Town Clerk for more than 30 years.

She was a member of the North Hillsdale United Methodist Church, a lifetime member of the Hillsdale Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary, past master of the North Hillsdale Grange, a member of the Pomona Grange and a 4-H leader.

Mrs. Smith enjoyed her family, friends, neighbors, church and town community. Among her many interests were her vegetable and flower gardens, knitting, crocheting and baking.

Survivors include: her son and daughter-in-law, Edward and Sara Smith of Hillsdale; her daughter and son-in-law, Wendy and William Biasin of Great Barrington, MA; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren along with several nieces and nephews.

On September 22, 1940, she married Arthur Smith. He predeceased her in 1993. She was also predeceased by a sister, Mary Wambach, and a brother, Warren Hoffman, Sr.

Friends are invited to visit the Peck and Peck Funeral Home, 8063 State Route 22, Copake, for calling hours, Wednesday, March 30, 2011 from 5 to 8 p.m. Her funeral service will be celebrated Thursday, March 31, 2011 at 11 a.m. from the North Hillsdale United Methodist Church with the Rev. Juanita Middlebrook officiating.

Interment will follow in the North Hillsdale Cemetery.

Ann Van Buren, 78, English teacher, church member

HUDSON—Ann H. Van Buren, 78, of Gaffney Lane, Kinderhook, died Monday, March 28, 2011, at Columbia Memorial Hospital.

Born in Utica, December 11, 1932, she was the daughter of the late John A. and Helen (Regetz) Hansmann.

Mrs. Van Buren was a graduate of St. Lawrence University and earned

her master’s degree at the State University at Albany. She was a teacher and head of the English Department at Ichabod Crane Central School as well as the cheerleading advisor there. She also taught English at Chatham Central School. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, an educational honor society and an active member of the Kinderhook Reformed Church, serving in a variety of capacities, most recently as a member of the consistory.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years, E. Gordon Van Buren of Kinderhook; her son, Mark Van Buren (Jocelyn) of Burlington CT; her cherished grandchildren, Amanda, Erika and Edward; and several cousins.

Friends may call Wednesday, March 30 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Raymond E. Bond Funeral Home, Inc., Route 9, Valatie. Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 31, 11 a.m. at the Kinderhook Reformed Church, Route 9, Kinderhook with the Rev. Rudy Visser officiating. Interment will follow in Kinderhook Cemetery.
