Norman Finch, 77, English teacher, sports fan
HUDSON—Norman Frederick Finch, 77, of Hudson passed away after a long illness, Friday, July 29, 2011 at Community Hospice at Columbia Memorial Hospital surrounded by his loving family.
He was born June 12, 1934 in Catskill, to the late Norman Gray Finch and Kathryn (Moran) Finch. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Mary Finch.
Mr. Finch served as a pilot in the US Navy after the Korean War.
He enjoyed a long career in education. He was an English teacher and athletic director at St. Patrick’s School in Catskill until retiring, and a substitute teacher for the Red Hook Central School District. He also worked as an assistant basketball coach at Siena College.
Mr. Finch was an avid sports fan and loved to watch the games on TV. He was also a member of St. Mary’s Church in Hudson.
Mr. Finch is survived by: his devoted friend and companion, Anne Rogers of Hudson; his four loving children and their families, Karen and Eric Shibuya and their daughter, Erin of Fredericksburg, VA, Brian and Grace Finch and their children, Elijah, Emmerson and Cullen of Beaumont, CA, Jenifer and Jim DeMercurio and their children, Brennan, Nina and Evan of Macomb, MI, and Traci and Troy Ortega and their children, Alecia, Trevor and Aiden of Ravena and their mother, Carol Adriance of Hannacroix.
Calling hours are 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, July 31 at the Bates & Anderson-Redmond & Keeler Funeral Home.
Prayers will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Monday, August 1 at the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial, 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church in Hudson.
Interment will be in Cedar Park Cemetery.
Marie Pomeroy, 81, legal secretary, volunteer
GHENT—Marie F. Pomeroy, 81, formerly of Claverack, passed away Friday, July 29, 2011 at the Whittier Nursing Home.
Born April 26, 1930 in East Chatham, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Sadie (Madden) Mayhood.
She was a secretary for the law office of William Spampinato. She was a lifelong area resident, a Red Cross Volunteer, a member of the Philmont Chorus and a member of Mount Pleasant Church in Greenport.
Mrs. Pomeroy was the beloved mother of David (Mary) Sleezer of Stottville, Rayford (Kathy) Pomeroy, Jr. of Greenport and Judy (Peter) Michielien of Claverack. Also surviving are her loving sister, Elizabeth Mayhood of Hudson, seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Rayford Pomeroy, Sr., and her sister, Evelyn Gimpel.
Calling hours are 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, August 3 at the Bates & Anderson-Redmond & Keeler Funeral Home.
Services will follow at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Burial will be at a later date.
