Three die when car hurtles into tree

RED HOOK—Three people, including two Hudson men, died in a grisly Route 9G wreck police believe was caused by a combination of speed and alcohol, Saturday, January 14 at 1:13 a.m.

Troopers from the Rhinebeck barracks investigated the one-car accident and discovered Favio Avila Debernard, 24, of Hudson was driving a white Pontiac Grand Am GT north on State 9G just south of the Columbia County line, when he lost control of the car, went off the east shoulder of the highway and struck a tree.

Mr. Debernard, along with Ethan Keil, 22, of Hudson and Micah Evans, 21, of Tivoli were all pronounced dead at the scene by the Dutchess County Medical Examiner.

Troopers were assisted by State Police investigators and the State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit.  A preliminary investigation shows that speed and alcohol were contributing factors in the crash. State Police were also assisted by Tivoli Fire Department who had the arduous task of extricating the victims from the vehicle using the Jaws of Life, a process which took several hours.
