Joan Cook, 78, church member, liked the breeze on the porch

ALBANY—Joan E. Cook, 78, of Hudson, went to eternal life, Monday, March 19, 2012 at St. Peter’s Hospice Inn.

Born in Hudson January 2, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Helen (Shumsky) Lawton.

She was a prayerful member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Hudson. She enjoyed quiet summer breezes on the front porch, feeding backyard birds and squirrels, fellowship with her friends at the Salvation Army Soup Kitchen in Hudson, senior citizen bus trips to Mohegan Sun and crocheting.

She was the beloved wife of Albert “Cookie” Cook for 60 years, and devoted mother of Beverly Cook of Las Vegas, NV, Albert C. Cook (Pamela) of Hudson, David Cook (Susan) of Valatie and Catherine McGlauflin (Tim) of Coeymans Hollow. Also surviving are six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and her sister, Sandra Fawthrop of Sarasota, FL.

She was predeceased by two sisters, Marilyn Mosley and Dolores Balazs and two brothers, Charles “Sonny” Lawton and Gerald Lawton, Sr.

Private cremation will take place at the Gardner Earl Crematory in Troy.

The family extends a heartfelt thank you to the hospice angels at the Hospice Inn and the Community Hospice of Columbia/Greene for their compassionate care and support.

Paul Barden, 88, WWII vet, plumber, outdoorsman

PHILMONT—Paul Wood Barden of Philmont died Saturday, March 17, 2012 at his home. He was 88.

Born in Spencertown, July 22, 1923, he was the son of the late George and Lucy Barden.

Mr. Barden was a veteran of World War II, who served in the U.S. Navy in the China-Burma-India Theatre of Operations.

He was a self-employed plumber most of his life and retired at an early age from the New York State Training School for Girls after many years of service. An avid outdoorsman, Mr. Barden then went on to own and operate Barden’s Sport Shop in Philmont.

He was a member of the Philmont American Legion Post #252, the Hudson Elks Lodge #787 and the Second Reformed Church of Claverack.

He was predeceased by his wife of 68 years, Edna (Moore) Barden.

Mr. Barden will be missed by his children, Mary Jeanne (John) Hoose of Philmont, Frances (Charles) Woullard of Livingston, Donna (Willard) Klima of Copake and Richard (Karen) Barden of Albany; one sister, Marge Boyles; 28 grand and great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by one grandson, Tim Klima in 2002.

Calling hours are Wednesday, March 21, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Sacco-McDonald-Valenti Funeral Home, 700 Town Hall Drive, Greenport.

Funeral services at the funeral home begin at 1 p.m. with Pastor Dan Herrick of the Second Reformed Church of Claverack officiating. Burial will follow in Mellenville Union Cemetery. Memorial contributions are requested to the Second Reformed Church of Claverack, Box 7, Philmont 12565. A catered reception will be held at the Second Reformed Church of Claverack Church Street in Philmont.

 

 

Carol Scott, 70, Hudson High grad, homemaker

HUDSON—Carol Jean (Myers) Scott, 70, of Columbiaville died Monday March 19, 2012 at Columbia Memorial Hospital after a long illness.

Born in Hudson, March 15, 1942, she was the daughter of the late Peter and Anna (Miller) Myers.

Mrs. Scott was a graduate of the Hudson High School class of 1959 and a homemaker.

She is survived by her husband, Angelo (Scotti) Scott of Columbiaville; a daughter, Kelly Nicoletta (Angelo) of Valatie; a sister, Nancy Praznik (James) of Whitesboro; three grandchildren, Jenae, Rocco and Michael Nicoletta.

She was predeceased by her sister, Betty Anne Brown.

A memorial Mass will be held Saturday March 31, 11 a.m. at the Church of St. Joseph, Stuyvesant Falls with the Reverend Joseph Falletta officiating. Interment will be at the convenience of the family.

There will be no calling hours.
