Ruth Alger (1935 – 2012)

GREENPORT—Ruth F. Alger, 77, of Charleroi, PA., formerly of Columbiaville died Sunday, May 27, 2012.

She was born in Bedford, February 12, 1935.

She is survived by her husband, John Alger, Sr.; her 12 children and two brothers.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m., Friday, June 1 at the at the Sacco-McDonald-Valenti Funeral Home, 700 Town Hall Drive, Greenport, with Pastor Osborne  from the Bible Baptist Church officiating. Burial in the family plot will follow in Cedar Park Cemetery in Hudson.

Lawrence Coon (1935 – 2012)

ALBANY—Lawrence D. “Sweeper” Coon, 76, of Ghent died Tuesday, May 29, 2012 at Albany Medical Center.

He was born October 29, 1935 in Hudson, the son of the late Donald and Laura (Felpel) Coon.

Mr. Coon grew up farming sweet corn with his father in Ghent, Virginia, North Carolina and Florida. After selling the farms, he started painting in New York and went on to become one of the premier pole barn builders, specializing in agricultural buildings in New York, Connecticut and Massachusetts. He was the owner of Lawrence D. Coon and Son, Inc. He was also a life member of the Ghent Sportsman Club. Mr. Coon was well loved by all those who met him, leaving a lasting impression from the first hello. He was always ready with a story or advice. His family meant the world to him with Sunday pancake breakfasts and Sunday night pizza for everyone who came. His legacy will live on in his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He is survived by his soulmate and beautiful wife of 57 years, Marcia (Bartel) Coon; his adoring Pomeranian, Mika; five children, Wesley (Patricia), Conrad (Donna), Richard, Laura (John) and Paul; his grandchildren, Jacquelyn and Jay Coon Hutson, Michael and Andrea Kowalski Coon, Meghan and Will Coon Calhoun, Dane, Lukas (Kara Lansing), Tiffany, Jordan and Courtney Coon, Chelsea Mabey (Tom Nieto), Austin (Bonnie Flood), Kaytlin Coon, E.J. Lyons Coon, Kyle Mabey, Logan, Ryan, David and Paul, Jr., “P.J.” Coon and Dawn (Matt) Federowicz Munera; his great grandchildren, Zachary and Colton Hutson, Darrah and Levi Coon and Riley Munera; his sister, Shirley Gibbons; a very special niece, Peggy Schermerhorn Myers; close family friend, Sally Heimroth and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, Bruce Coon and a granddaughter, Raquel Coon.

The family extends its special thanks to the nurses and doctors at Albany Medical Center ED, ICU and M-5, where Mr. Coon spent his last days. The compassion and care he received and the support the family was given is greatly appreciated.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Friday, June 1 at the Raymond E. Bond Funeral Home, Inc., Valatie, with the Reverenc Rudy Visser officiating.

Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Florence Curik (1920 – 2012)

LIVINGSTON—Florence R. Curik, 92, of Germantown died Friday, May 18 at the Livingston Hills Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Born May 18, 1920 in Flushing, she was the daughter of the late Dominick and Elvira (Maestri) Bottali.

Mrs. Curik worked at the Universal Match Company in Hudson as a machine operator for more than 30 years.

Survivors include: her son, Kenneth and his wife Peggy Curik of Germantown; two sisters, Anna Bottali of NC, and Arlene Koenig of PA; two grandsons, Kenneth, Jr., of Coxsackie, Brian of Philmont and three great grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, John Curik, who died February 17, 1989.

There are no calling hours.

Services will be private and at the convenience of the family.
