Joan Vander Borgh (1943 – 2012)
DUMONT, NJ—Joan F. (nee Bratton) Vander Borgh, 68, of Dumont, NJ, born August 21, 1943, passed away June 20, 2012 surrounded by her loving family.
Mrs. Vander Borgh was secretary of the Woodside Cemetery Board. She taught stained glass at hobby classes, was an avid reader and lover of books, birds, baseball, gardening and needlework. She attended Old North Church, Dumont, NJ, and was a member of the Women’s Guild.
Mrs. Vander Borgh is survived by her husband of 39 years, the Reverend Richard J. Vander Borgh; a brother, Edward Bratton and his wife Nan, and many nieces and nephews.
She was a faithful wife and friend. She struggled with metastatic cancer for more than six years with her final battle during the past 15 months.
A Committal Service was held in the family plot at the Cedar Park Cemetery in Hudson, Monday, June 25, 2012. At Mrs. Vander Borgh’s request there were no calling hours or service. Arrangements were under the direction of the Frech Funeral Home, 161 Washington Avenue, Dumont, NJ.
Robert Silliman (1939 – 2012)
ALBANY—Robert H. Silliman, Sr., 73, of Schodack Landing died Sunday, June 24, 2012 at Albany Memorial Hospital.
Born in Oneonta, June 14, 1939, he was the son of the late Francis and Marjorie (Griffin) Silliman.
Mr. Silliman was a veteran in the U.S. Army and was employed by Sunoco in Rensselaer as a truck driver for many years.
He is survived by: his wife, Jutta (Marek) Silliman; one daughter, Cheryl Bergeron(Christian) of CT; two sons, Robert H. Silliman, Jr., of Chelsea, MA and Brian K. Silliman of Nassau; three stepchildren, Kathrein Parsons of Castleton, Karen White (Steven) of Valatie and Ernest Gier (Michelle) of Niverville; two sisters, Judith Lee of Sante Fe, NM, and Karen Zurel of Sebastion, FL; five grandchildren, Tyler and Adam Coleman, Joseph and Sean Silliman and Gavin Bergeron; eight step-grandchildren, Joshua, Elysha, Samantha and Cassidy Parsons, Melissa Russell, Cody White and Collin and Kayley Gier; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter, Laura Coleman (John) and a brother, Francis Silliman, Jr.
A memorial Mass will be held at noon, Thursday, June 28 at St. John the Baptist Church, Route 9, Valatie, with the Reverend John Molyn officiating. Burial in Saratoga National Cemetery will be at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Castleton Rescue Squad. Arrangements are with the Raymond E. Bond Funeral Home, Valatie.
John Wrigley (1957 – 2012)
VALATIE—John V. “Jack” Wrigley, 54, of Greenport, a lifelong area resident, died Monday, June 25 of injuries sustained in a Sunday, June 24 motorcycle accident in Valatie.
Born in Hudson, September 3, 1957, he was the son of the late John M. “Jack” Wrigley and Dolores (Marie) Wrigley of Greenport.
Mr. Wrigley worked in both the sales and service departments at Riverview Marine for more than 30 years. He was an avid motorcycle enthusiast and was the current vice president of ABATE of Columbia County; and a member of East Coast Riders, Hudson Power Boat Association and a Hudson-Mohawk Council delegate.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by: his wife, Dawn E. (Rowell) Wrigley at home; one daughter, Kristen Wrigley and her fiancé Ben Frary, both of Oswego; one brother, David M. Wrigley, Sr., of Greenport; one sister, Renee and (Fran) Abitabile of Greenport; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Thursday, June 28, 11 a.m. at the Sacco-McDonald-Valenti Funeral Home, 700 Town Hall Drive, Greenport, with Deacon Charles O’Neill officiating. Burial will follow in Cedar Park Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to ABATE of Columbia County, P.O. Box 227, Hudson 12534.
Cynthia Engel (1946 – 2012)
ALBANY—Cynthia M. Engel, 65, of Malden Bridge died at St. Peter’s Hospice Inn, Albany
Born November 1, 1946 in Albany, she was the daughter of the late George and Mary (DeFlumer) St. Louis.
Mrs. Engel remained positive and never complained during her long battle with lung cancer. She was surrounded by her loving family when she passed to her place in heaven, where she will continue to watch over family just as she did in this life. The loves of her life were her three granddaughters, Bailey Marie, Kira Marie and Victoria Marie.
Mrs. Engel retired as corporate secretary of American Boiler Company in Albany. In retirement, she enjoyed sewing, gardening and being a lovely person. Along with her husband, she was an avid blue water sailor with over 40,000 miles at sea. She also enjoyed touring the country by motorcycle.
She was a past volunteer with St. John’s Elves and Community Hospice of Columbia/Greene. Mrs. Engel will be remembered by family and friends for her unselfish giving personality and that beautiful smile.
She is survived by: her loving husband, Paul T. Engel; two sons, Wade T. Engel (Meagan) of Troy and William E. Engel (Melissa) of Nassau and a sister, Penny Riley of Lisbon.
Funeral services will be Monday, July 2, 9 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Church, Valatie, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Reverend Robert DeLeon . Interment will be in Saratoga National Cemetery. Calling hours will be Sunday, July 1 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Raymond E. Bond Funeral Home, Route 9, Valatie. Memorial contributions may be made to the Community Hospice of Columbia/Greene, 47 Liberty Street, Catskill 12414. The family would like to thank the staff and nurses at St. Peter’s Hospice Inn for their care and compassion during Mrs. Engel’s final days.
Helen Kukon (1933 – 2012)
CLERMONT—Helen Kukon, 78, of Germantown died unexpectedly June 25, 2012 at the home of a friend in Clermont.
Born July 20, 1933 in Valatie, she was the daughter of the late Harold and Helen DeWitt.
Mrs. Kukon was a self-employed beautician for more than 50 years. She was a caregiver for many people in the area. Her memberships included Christ Lutheran Church in Viewmont, Eastern Star of Red Hook, Pomona Grange, Livingston Manor Grange and past lecturer for the Rhinebeck Grange. She had been a member of the former Southern Columbia Ambulance Squad and the Germantown Fire Company Auxiliary.
Survivors include: her son, Lloyd Kukon, Jr., and daughter-in-law Milyn Kukon of Germantown; two sisters, Evangeline Murphy of NJ, and Dorothy Hoffman of Hillsdale; three grandsons, John Justin and Jordon Kukon; several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband Lloyd Kukon, Sr., who died June 3, 1995; her daughter, Linda Kukon and sisters, Edna Handcox and Mary Maiorano.
Calling hours will be 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 28 at the Yadack-Fox Funeral Home in Germantown. Services will be 11 a.m. Friday, June 29 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Manorton.
Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery in Manorton.
