CHATHAM — The Chatham Central School District is currently exploring the option of closing a school as a way to realize greater operational efficiency, control costs and reflect the District’s declining enrollment. A recently completed facilities study performed by an objective, independent agency hired by the District determined that if Chatham were to consolidate buildings, it would most effectively be accomplished by closing Chatham Middle School and relocating those students to the High School and MED campus.
The public is strongly encouraged to attend an informational town hall meeting scheduled for August 14, at 7:00 p.m. in the High School library to learn more about the results of this facilities study and discuss what consolidation could mean for Chatham CSD. A repeat of this informational meeting will be held on September 11, at 6:30 p.m. in the High School library.
At these meetings, the Board of Education will provide details concerning the facilities study report, which explored what cost savings closing CMS could realize, what construction and renovations that may be necessary to fully integrate the CMS program into CHS and MED, and possible future uses for CMS if it were to close. The board will also provide a timeline for the next steps in the consolidation study process, answer questions and solicit feedback from the audience.
These meetings are designed to involve the community in a conversation about what is the best course of action for Chatham in the years to come, and provide an update on the progress the District has made in exploring consolidation as a future possibility. No decision to close a building has been made, and more research remains to be done before the Board will determine whether or not consolidation is right for Chatham.
