Kenneth E. Smith (1924 – 2012)
HUDSON—Kenneth E. Smith, 88, of Jarvis Lane, Kinderhook died Monday, November 19, 2012 at Columbia Memorial Hospital.
He was born August 25, 1924 in Kinderhook, the son of the late Miner and Vivian (Robertson) Smith. He graduated from Martin Van Buren High School in Kinderhook and attended Bard College and Cornell University.
Mr. Smith was a World War II veteran. He served in the U.S. Army and in the Combat Engineers, European Theater including Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. He was the recipient of five Bronze Battle Stars and the Purple Heart.
Mr. Smith was manager of the Blue Seal Feeds in Chatham and a former Justice of the Peace and real estate broker. He was a member of the Clapp/Novak American Legion Post in Kinderhook, Stuyvesant Falls VFW Post # 9593, Palmer Engine and Hose Company of Kinderhook and the New York State Magistrates Association. He was also a member and elder of the Kinderhook Reformed Church.
Surviving are his wife, Jane and a son, David of Freehold, NJ, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, Clyde, Albert, Donald and Miner Smith, Jr.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 24, 11 a.m. at the Kinderhook Reformed Church with the Reverend Rudy Visser officiating. There will be no calling hours. Interment will follow in Kinderhook Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Kinderhook Reformed Church Deacons Fund, 21 Broad Street, Kinderhook 12106.
