Elizabeth Draxler Werner (1913 – 2012)

ARLINGTON, VA—Elizabeth Draxler Werner, 99, formerly of Hudson, died Thursday, December 6, 2012 in Arlington, Virginia.

Born July 12, 1913 in Greenport, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Elizabeth (Glovanovitz) Draxler.

Mrs. Werner worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Arlington until she was 79 years old, retiring in 1992.

She enjoyed gardening and was an avid doll collector. She began collecting dolls in 1990. Mrs. Werner loved people and was a kind, loving and caring person to everyone she knew.

She was predeceased by her loving husband, Max Werner in 1952.

She is survived by: her devoted son, Frank E. Werner of Arlington, several other family members and many close friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial was offered Thursday, December 13, 2012 at the Holy Trinity Parish, St. Mary’s Church in Hudson.

Burial was in the family plot in Cedar Park Cemetery in Hudson.

Harold S. Lansing, Sr. (1941 – 2012)

HUDSON—Harold S. Lansing, Sr., 71, of Claverack passed away at Columbia Memorial Hospital, Thursday, December 13, 2012.

Born April 26, 1941, he was the son of the late Seymour and Ruth (Teator) Lansing of Hudson.

He is survived by: his wife of 49 years, Barbara (Brown) Lansing; a son, Harold Lansing, Jr.; daughter-in-law, Candace Lansing; daughter, Valerie Lansing; son-in-law, Lawrence Fingar and three grandchildren Anthony, Mackenzie and Quennell.

Mr. Lansing graduated from Hudson High School in 1960. He was a life member of the A.B. Shaw Fire Company. He had retired in 2000 from Columbia-Greene Community College, where he was director of security. He was loved by many for his sense of humor and natural charisma.

Calling hours are 4 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, December 18 at the Bates & Anderson – Redmond & Keeler Funeral Home.

Services will be conducted at 11 a.m., Wednesday, December 19 at the funeral home.

Burial will be in the Reformed Dutch Church Cemetery in Claverack.

Kenneth Oelkers, Sr. (1925 – 2012)

STUYVESANT—Kenneth Oelkers, Sr., 87, of Kinderhook, died Friday, December 14, 2012 in Stuyvesant.

Born June 4, 1925 in Stockport, he was the son of the late William T. and Charlotte (Prate) Oelkers, Sr.

He was a Hudson High School graduate and served with the U.S. Army 88th Infantry in Europe during World War II and was an ex-prisoner of war. He was a machinist with Anticorrosive in Castleton for 25 years and later with Crellin Plastics in Chatham for 10 years, retiring in 1988.

He was a member of the Stuyvesant Falls VFW Post # 9593, the Northeast Chapter of American Ex-Prisoners of War, the Disabled American Veterans and the Clapp-Novak American Legion Post in Kinderhook.

He is survived by: one son, Kenneth Oelkers, Jr. of Kinderhook and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Catherine (Powell) Oelkers; and his siblings, Clotilda Horner, Dorothy Ibert and William T. Oelkers Jr.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m., Tuesday, December 18 at the Raymond E. Bond Funeral Home, Inc, Valatie, with the Reverend Edward VanKampen officiating. Burial will follow in Kinderhook Cemetery. Calling hours will be Monday, December 17 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Evelyn F. Buffington (1923 – 2012)

HUDSON—Evelyn F. Buffington passed away peacefully at Columbia Memorial Hospital in the care of Community Hospice of Columbia/Greene, Tuesday, December 11, 2012.

She was born February 2, 1923 in Hudson, to Anna and John Tenerowicz.

She graduated from Hudson High School in 1941 and then began nurses training at House of Mercy (now Pittsfield General) Hospital in Pittsfield, MA, leaving after two years to marry and start her family.

She and her husband, Jack, operated a Sunoco gas station in Claverack in the early 1950s. After that, she began doing private duty nursing for a number of families in the area. She eventually went on to own and operate the Pine Shed Gift Shop for 10 years, and then she went back to private duty nursing.

Mrs. Buffington and her siblings developed a love for the water while spending summers at the family cottage at Lake Taghkanic. She especially enjoyed her trips to Maine and Cape Cod, but her greatest enjoyment was her home in which she took great pride, and until a few years ago, insisted on doing most of her own yard work. She was a wonderful homemaker who loved baking, making a large variety of cookies to give each year as Christmas gifts.

Mrs. Buffington was fortunate to have outstanding neighbors, who were always ready to lend a helping hand.

She is survived by: two daughters, Ann (George) Mickle of Craryville and Barbara of Manson’s Landing, BC; her brother, Alfred Drake of Clark, CO; three grandchildren; two nieces and three nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Germond “Jack” Buffington; her brother, Raymond Tenerowicz and her sister, Helen Housman.

Graveside services were conducted at Cedar Park Cemetery, Hudson, Thursday, December 13.

Donations may be made to Community Hospice of Columbia/Greene, 47 Liberty Street, Catskill 12414. Arrangements were with the Bates & Anderson – Redmond & Keeler Funeral Home, Hudson.
