Elisabeth Ann McEwan (1921 – 2013)

CORTLAND—Elisabeth “Betti” Ann (Bennett) McEwan, 91, a long-time resident of Canaan died Friday, January 25 at the Cortland Regional Medical Center surrounded by her loving family.

She was born November 25, 1921 in Kingston, the daughter of the late Clifford F. and Elisabeth (Heaney) Bennett.

She was a graduate of New Paltz College. Mrs. McEwan taught school in several states and mainly at New Lebanon Central School in New Lebanon, from where she retired in 1986.

She served on the Chatham Central School Board, Canaan Volunteer Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary and was a communicant of the Immaculate Conception Church in New Lebanon. Her love of history took her traveling around the world to all seven continents—Antarctica was her favorite. She was blessed with many wonderful, caring neighbors and friends that will miss her dearly.

She is survived by: her daughter, Maribeth McEwan of Homer; sons, Mark (Nancy) McEwan of South Carolina, Jay (Patricia) McEwan of East Chatham, Chris (Donna) McEwan of Florida and Greg (Erica) McEwan of Chatham; her daughter-in-law, Kathy (McEwan) Hawyer of Kinderhook; 14 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren.

Mrs. McEwan was predeceased by her loving husband, John A. McEwan in 1982 and her firstborn, Bennett W. McEwan in 1980.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Thursday, January 31 from the Immaculate Conception Church, New Lebanon. Burial was in the Canaan Cemetery. Arrangements were with the Wenk Funeral Home, Chatham. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice. To send online condolences visit

Ronald R. Rose (1939 – 2013)

KINGSTON—Ronald R. Rose, 73, of Tivoli and a lifelong area resident, passed away Wednesday, January 30, 2013 at the Benedictine Hospital in Kingston.

Born April 19, 1939 in Rhinebeck, he was the son of the late Arthur and Mabel (Moore) Rose.

For many years Mr. Rose worked in maintenance at Taconic Farms in Germantown. He was a member of and bartended at the Harris Smith Post 524 Sons of the American Legion in Tivoli.

Mr. Rose was also an avid fisherman.

He is survived by: his sister, Lillian Curtis of Livingston: his brother, Donald Rose of Rhinebeck; several nieces, nephews and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Charles Rose, Sr.

Friends may call at the Burnett & White Funeral Homes, Monday, February 4, 2013 from 1:30 to 2 p.m. At 2 p.m. a funeral service will be held with the Reverend Eric Titus officiating. Burial will be at St. John’s Reformed Church Cemetery, Red Hook.

Robert T. Turner (1937 – 2013)

CLAVERACK—Robert T. Turner, 75, of Route 66, Claverack died January 30 at his home.

Born December 26, 1937 in Albany, he is the son of the late Charles and Elizabeth (Griffith) Turner.

He graduated from Columbia High School in 1955, then attended Hudson Valley Community College and Wentworth Institute in Boston, MA. After completion of his studies, Mr. Turner worked for several phone companies for more than 35 years, retiring as a foreman with Verizon.

Mr. Turner was a member of the Rip Van Winkle Amateur Radio Society and headed the R.A.C.E.S. group of Columbia County.

He is survived by: his wife, Georgette (Mellen) Turner; daughter, Renee (Charles) Shook of Hudson; granddaughter, Jennifer Shook; brother, C. Michael (Laraine) Turner of North Greenbush; sister, Lynn Burdette of Framingham, MA, and several nieces and nephews.

A visitation hour followed by a memorial service will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. Monday, February 4 at the Bates and Anderson – Redmond and Keeler funeral Home in Hudson.

Interment will be at the convenience of the family.

Jared “J.J.” John Hoffman (1987 – 2013)

VALATIE—Jared “J.J.” John Hoffman, 25, of Valatie passed away Saturday, February 2, 2013 at his home.

He was born December 14, 1987 in Albany, the son of John W. and Joyce (Walker) Hoffman.

He attended the Schodack Day Habilitation program and loved to travel with his family to Maine and Florida. He always had a smile on his face.

Besides his parents, he is survived by: his sister, Cassandra (Brian) Brady; his grandmother, Lois Hoffman; several aunts, uncles and cousins.

A funeral will be held 11 a.m., Tuesday, February 5 at Clearview Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, 275 Schodack Drive, Castleton, with the Reverend Nick Becker officiating. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Valatie following the funeral.

Calling hours will be Monday, February 4 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Raymond E. Bond Funeral Home, Inc., Route 9, Valatie. Contributions may be made to the Valatie Santa Claus Club or the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
