CHATHAM–In a crucial Patroon Conference baseball match up, Hudson traveled here to Chatham Monday and handed the Panthers their first league loss of the year, 13-8, allowing the Bluehawks (8-2) to move one game behind Chatham (9-1) and keep pace with Catskill (8-2).
Hudson pounded out 13 hits to score their 13 runs, while using a workmanlike effort from Ryan Moore on the mound to earn the win. Chatham piled up nine hits, but had to use three pitchers to try and contain the Bluehawks’ explosive offense.
The visitors jumped on Chatham starting pitcher Cody Hall right from the get-go, putting up three runs in the opening inning. Darian Blanks led off with a walk and quickly used his speed to swipe second base. After a fly out, Darren Conte drove in the opening run and moved to second on an error in the outfield; a wild pitch moved him to third. After another out, TJ Gardner drove Conte in with an RBI double. Gardner then crossed the plate himself when Moore drove him home with a single.
After Chatham went down in order in the bottom half of the inning and Hudson failed to add more runs in the top of the second, it was time for the Panther offense to come alive in the bottom of the second. Cody Coons started the inning by reaching on an error, and Dylan Cox and Aaron Jackson each followed up with singles to load the bases. Steve Munson then tied the game at three, scoring all of his teammates with a bases clearing double. An error at first moved runners to the corners as Joe Williams reached base. Garrett Jornov brought Munson home for a 4-3 lead and a pair of passed balls brought Williams home and moved Jornov all the way to third, where he would come home on a balk. Hall drew a walk and Coons would eventually make his way back up in the second to drive home the seventh run of the inning with an RBI double.
Both teams went down quietly in the third before the Hudson offense manufactured a pair of runs in the fourth. With one out Blanks got on base with a single and stole second and third, as Dustin Conte drew a walk. Darren Conte then plated both with a double to pull Hudson to within two.
Still down two, Hudson again found ways to bring runs home, plating four. Dustin and Darren Conte each walked to lead off the inning and Elias Lopez blasted a two RBI triple to score both. Gardner brought Lopez home with a sacrifice fly. A double by Moore meant the end for Hall on the mound, who was replaced by Williams, but a wild pitch an error eventually brought in Hudson’s ninth run of the game. In the bottom of the inning Chatham pulled within one run as Williams led off with a double and came home on a Kody Skpe single later in the inning.
In the top of the seventh Hudson broke the game wide open as they scored five more runs to put the game away. Blanks led off with a bunt single and stole second. Dustin Conte walked and Darren Conte brought Blanks home with a ground rule double. Lopez walked to load the bases and Gardner brought home the Contes with a two RBI single. After a pair of outs Manny Folds walked to again load the bases and Flynn O’Connell came on in relief for Chatham. Addison Cunningham was hit by a pitch to bring home the final run of the game.
Chatham led off the bottom of the inning with a single, but were unable to bring any runs across to prevent their first league loss.
Moore went the distance for Hudson, allowing eight runs, six earned on nine hits, a walk and a hit batter while striking out one to earn the win. At the plate Blanks finished with a pair of singles, a walk, four stolen bases and three runs, Dustin Conte had three walks and three runs, Darren Conte had a single, two doubles, a walk, four RBI and three runs and Elias Lopez had a double, a triple, a walk, two RBI and two runs to lead the top half of Hudson’s order. The bottom half held its own as Gardner finished with a single, a double, a walk, four RBI and a run, Moore had a single, a double an RBI and a run, Joe Rivette finished with a single and a pair of stolen bases, Folds drew a walk and Cunningham had a single, was hit by a pitch and brought home a run.
Chatham’s Hall went 5 1/3 innings allowing nine earned runs on 10 hits and 5 walks while striking out 5. Williams went 1 1/3 inning giving up four earned runs on three hits and three walks while striking out two, while O’ Connell threw 1/3+ inning hitting one batter. At the plate Skype had a single and an RBI, Hall drew a walk and scored, Coons had a single, a double, an RBI and a run, Jackson had a single and a run, Munson had a double, three RBI and a run, Williams had a double and drove in two runs and Jornov finished with a single, an RBI and a run.
