Committee sends wireless tax, gun rule change to board

HUDSON–Finance Committee of the county Board of Supervisors has signed off on a number of proposals that will now go to the full board at its regular meeting scheduled for Wednesday evening, May 8 at 401 State Street. Among the measures is one that would to impose a surcharge, not to exceed 30 cents a month on wireless communications services and another that would remove a requirement for board approval before people could carry licensed firearms on county property.

Residents interested in learning more about the wireless surcharge plan can attend a public hearing on the matter at 7 p.m. May 8, immediately preceding the regular Board of Supervisors meeting, which convenes at 7:30.

Supervisor William Hughes (D-Hudson 4th Ward) initiated a discussion about the resolution to amend the Columbia County Workplace Violence Prevention Program and grant exemptions for certain county officials to carry firearms. Mr. Hughes opposes the change.

The resolution to authorize the change was approved after the discussion and will likely be on the agenda when the full board meets next week.

Also at the April 30 Finance Committee meeting chaired by Ghent Supervisor Lawrence Andrews (R) supervisors:

Authorized a proposed contract with Common Ground Dispute Resolution Inc. to mediate a conflict between DHS Management and members of the UPSEU (United Public Service Employees Union) in an attempt to settle a labor dispute and avoid potential legal fees

Heard County Treasurer P.J. Keeler propose upgrading the current accounting monitor position to accounting systems monitor, for a net increase of $8,000. He also suggested eliminating one bookkeeper position and creating a tax specialist position, which will alleviate having to hire another full-time person for the accounting function. A subcommittee formed to evaluate the county’s ongoing cash flow position will review both of these proposals before presenting the resolution to the Board

Heard a proposal to appoint two new members of the Alcohol and Substance Abuse Subcommittee of the Columbia County Community Services Board, as well as a new member for the developmental disabilities subcommittee.

Learned that volunteers are needed to deliver meals to enrollees in managed long-term care. Those interested in assisting should contact the county Office for the Aging Administrator Kary Jablonka, 518 828-4258.
