Henry M. Greenhouse (1934 – 2013)

HUDSON—Henry M. “Hank” Greenhouse, 79, of Green Acres Road, Greenport, a papermaker and assessor, died July 10, 2013 at Columbia Memorial Hospital.

Born in New York City, June 26, 1934, he was the son of the late Ruth Greenhouse and the late Bernard D. Greenhouse.

He graduated from Harrison High School, Harrison in 1951, and from SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry at Syracuse University in 1955, with a BS degree in paper science and engineering.

He served in the U.S. Army Chemical Corps from 1957 to 1959 under the Scientific and Professional Personnel program, working in the chemical warfare labs in Edgewood, MD, on the development of media used in the filter elements of the field protective mask.

He was employed by the former Columbia Corporation in Chatham from 1955 until his retirement in 1991. During this 36 year period he served as director of research and development and technical director. He was responsible for the development of several new products which were commercialized by the company for the quality control program and for all technical aspects of the papermaking process. He was instrumental in the design and operation of the effluent treatment plant at the Chatham Mill, one of the first biological secondary treatment plants serving the paper industry in New York State. He represented the company as a member of the northeast regional meeting planning committee of the National Council for Air and Stream Improvement, and delivered several papers on various aspects of wastewater treatment in the paperboard industry at its meetings.

He was a New York State-certified wastewater treatment plant operator, grade 3A; a retired member of the Technical Association of The Pulp and Paper Industry (TAPPI); a life-member of the Paper Industry Management Association (PIMA).

Following his retirement, he pursued another field of interest, earning 27-credit-hours from Columbia-Greene Community College in computer science.

In the 1997 Town of Greenport election, he was elected to the Board of Assessors for a four-year term. In 2001, he was appointed to the position of sole assessor, for a term of six years. He had served the Town of Greenport earlier as a member of the Planning Board for 10 years, and as its chairman for several. He had been the supervising operator of the town’s wastewater treatment plant when biological secondary treatment was initiated. He was a New York State-certified assessor, advanced.

In 2006, he retired from the Town of Greenport assessor position. In September 2007, he was appointed sole assessor for the Town of Clermont for a term of six years.

He had been a member and vice-president of the Hudson Jaycees; a 23-year member and vice-president of the Board of Directors of the Hudson Boys’ and Girls’ Club; treasurer of the Stockport Little League; president of the Columbia Box Board Federal Credit Union. He was a life-member of Congregation Anshe Emeth and served two three-year terms as a member of its Board of Directors.

He loved classical music, the New York Giants, his MacIntosh computer and his family.

He is predeceased by his beloved wife of 52 years, Elaine Greenhouse. He is survived by his beloved sons, Michael of Greenport and Kenneth (Brooke) of East Greenbush, and his brother, Dr. Jeff (Judy) Greenhouse of Oakland, CA.

Graveside services were conducted Sunday, July 14 at Cedar Park Cemetery.

Margaret Burdwin (1912 – 2013)

VALATIE—Margaret Burdwin, 101, passed away at Barnwell Nursing Home, July 5, 2013.

She was born May 13, 1912 to John and Susan Foster.

She was predeceased by her brother, Fred Foster and her husbands, J. Kenneth Klemmer and Fred Burdwin.

Mrs. Burdwin leaves her nieces, Gloria Bankowski (Eugene) of Cape Cod, MA, and Joan Stark (Fred) of West Taghkanic, and her nephew, Edward Foster (Linda) of Ghent. She also leaves a special friend, Cyndy Hall and many great-nieces and nephews.

She lived and worked in Stottville for A.D. Julliard Woolens and for Columbia Memorial Hospital in the housekeeping department until retirement. She also resided in West Taghkanic and Hudson.

Mrs. Burdwin was a good neighbor, always ready to help anyone in need. She enjoyed her daily paper, crosswords, reading, swimming and visits with her friends from Christ Church Episcopal. She was a member of the Hudson Elks Club and bowled in the ladies league there.

Memorial services were held July 8 at Christ Church Episcopal.

Robert J. Mabeus, Jr. (1958 – 2013)

PITTSFIELD, MA—Robert J. “Bobby” Mabeus, Jr., (known to many as Long Hair Bob), 54, of Browns Road, Stephentown died Wednesday, July 10 at Berkshire Medical Center after being stricken at his home.

Born in Albany, October 7, 1958, he was the son of the late Robert J. and Catherine L. Shuhart Mabeus. He was the former husband of the late Ulrike A. Hoppe Mabeus, who died June 26, 2013. They were married in Germany on July 15, 1979. Mr. Mabeus lived in Stephentown for three years, moving from East Nassau.

A 1978 graduate of Colonie Central High School, Mr. Mabeus enlisted into the United States Army and served at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland and Schweinfurt, Germany from 1978 until his honorable discharge in 1980.

He worked primarily as a construction laborer and most recently at the Speedway Diner in West Lebanon. Mr. Mabeus had a profound love for music, especially heavy metal, and attended countless concerts over the years. In the 1990s, he sang in a local metal band called “Pagan.”  Over the summers, he could usually be found swimming in the Kinderhook Creek at Black Bridge.

He was wonderful with animals and babies. He also enjoyed model cars.

Mr. Mabeus leaves his daughter, Melanie C. (Jeremy) Evans and grandchildren, Molly Cardamone and Jack Evans of Averill Park; his brother and best friend, John C. Mabeus of East Nassau; his two sisters, Mary Grace (Glenn) Monuteaux of Schodack and AnnMarie Mabeus of New Lebanon; nieces and nephews, Cassie Swearingin, Jamieann Mabeus, Jessica Mabeus, Robert J. Mabeus, III, Kairi Groves and Jaydon Mabeus; and his cat, Jasper.

There will be no formal services. A family picnic will be held at a later date to celebrate his life. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Samuel S. Stratton VA Medical Center Volunteer Services, c/o Hall & Higgins Funeral Home, PO Box 9, Stephentown 12168.

The family thanks the staff and counselors of the Stratton VA Medical Center in Albany for all of the love and support shown to Mr. Mabeus through the years.

Frances Thomson (1918 – 2013)

RHINEBECK—Frances Thomson, 94, of Red Hook died Thursday, July 11, 2013 at Northern Dutchess Hospital.

Born October 18, 1918 in Embden, Maine, she was the daughter of the late Alston and Katherine (Chase) Ward.

In 1951, she and her husband, Norman, moved to Red Hook, where they operated a fruit and dairy farm on Linden Avenue. From 1955 until her retirement in 1977, she taught home economics at Red Hook Central School. She was a lifelong member of St. John’s Reformed Church in Upper Red Hook, where she served in many capacities.

Mrs. Thomson was chosen for several community awards as she gave so generously of her time and service, as well as volunteering in Hospice for several years.

She is survived by: a son, Edward of Tivoli, and his son, Dale (Joella) Thomson of Latham, a daughter, Jean (Allan) Bard of Red Hook and their sons, Jonathan (Amanda) of Buffalo, Daniel (Brittany) of NH, and a daughter, Laurie of Red Hook and Katherine (William) Moore of Red Hook and their son, Carlton, as well as several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Norman in 1973, a brother, Lowell in 2011, and a grandson, Christopher in 1999.

A memorial service will be held Friday, July 19, at 11 a.m. at St. John’ Reformed Church in Upper Red Hook.
