KINDERHOOK–Ichabod Crane School Superintendent George Zini announced at a special board meeting August 20 that the district has hired Brian Aylward as interim primary school principal effective August 26.

Mr. Aylward, a retired principal from the Niskayuna School District in suburban Schenectady, was the interim assistant principal in Ichabod Crane high school in the 2008. Mr. Aylward’s salary is $375 per day.

Mr. Zini said that a search committee would be formed to find a permanent replacement for current primary school Principal Shannon Shine, who is leaving next week. “I’m confident that this is going to be a smooth transition,” said Mr. Zini.

The superintendent plans to appoint a new principal by January 2014, since Mr. Alyward said he would stay only until December. “We have a good plan in place, as we’ve done many times in the district looking for an administrator,” Mr. Zini said.

The board is also looking for 20 to 30 volunteers to form a Strategic Planning Committee. The board had started the process of forming the committee during the last school year, but Mr. Zini said that time line then was too aggressive. The board is now planning to have the committee met three times in October with representatives from Questar/BOCES III to develop a future plan of action for the district.

The meetings will be Monday, October 7, 6:30 to 9 p.m.; Thursday and Friday, October 24 and 25, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; and Monday, November 4, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Most meetings will be held in the high school library. Applications are due by September 20.

Applications are on the district website at www.IchabodCrane.org and at the district office, which is now in the high school. For more information, contact District Clerk Mindy Potts, at MPotts@IchabodCrane.org.

Also at the meeting former board member Regina Rose was awarded a Board Excellence Award from the New York State School Boards Association (NYSSBA) for attending several NYSSBA workshops and conventions. Current board member Susan Ramos was also acknowledged by organization for her attendance at events.

Board President Anthony Welcome announced at the beginning of the meeting that the high school library is now the home of all board meetings since the district office moved from the middle school. Meetings used to be held in the middle school library.

The next regular board meeting will be Tuesday, September 3 at 7 p.m.
