Voters reject new G’port firehouse

GREENPORT–By a vote of 203 to 146 town residents have rejected a proposal by the Greenport Fire District commissioners to spend up to $2.7 million to replace the Becraft Pumper Company Number 2 fire station with a new building.

In a brief press release from the Greenport Fire Department issued Tuesday evening, November 17 town fire commissioners said that as a result of the vote “we will not move forward with plans to build a new fire station.”

The site of the current fire station and the location that had been proposed for the larger replacement structure is 257 county Route 14.

The commissioners thanked all who had taken the time to learn about and vote on the proposal.
