GERMANTOWN—The Town Board has scheduled a Public Hearing for a new Local Law Tuesday, March 22 at 6:55 p.m. The law is for “the defense and indemnification of officers and officials.”
“The law is in response to concerns voiced by some of our Planning Board and Zoning Board of Appeals members,” Supervisor Joel Craig explained in an email Friday. “Most towns already have a similar law in place, but after research, the town attorney found we had not adopted such a law.”
The Planning Board is considering an application by Primax Properties to build a Dollar General retail store on Route 9G just north of County Route 8 / Main Street. The ZBA has before it a longtime dispute among neighbors on Route 9G and County Route 8 west of Route 9G.
The Public Hearing immediately precedes the regular Town Board meeting, which starts at 7 p.m. in Town Hall, 50 Palatine Park Road.
In other business during its February 23 meeting, the board:
•Authorized Mr. Craig to retain labor counsel and begin negotiations with United Public Service Employees Union, which, according to the union, represents full-time town employees, excepting elected officials
•Confirmed the quarterly workshop meeting for March 8, at which representatives from Hudson River Valley Greenway and the state Department of Environmental Conservation and Department of State would attend to discuss the grant opportunities administered by each agency
•Received a certificate of appreciation from the Town of Taghkanic for Germantown’s Highway Department, which helped Taghkanic build a salt shed
•Announced that KISS (Keeping Identities of Seniors Safe) takes place at Town Hall March 14 through 31 on Mondays and Fridays (9-11 a.m.), Wednesdays (6-8 p.m.) and Saturdays (9 a.m.-1 p.m.). KISS lets seniors shred, at no cost, documents they no longer need. For details, visit germantownny.org or call town clerk Joyce Vale, 518 537-6687
•Announced that vendor registration for the town’s July 2 Independence Day Celebration is now open to all non-profit and for-profit organizations interested in selling food and non-food items at the event. The celebration takes place in Palatine Park, and organizers expect more than 3,000 participants of all ages. Gates open at 4 p.m. and fireworks begin at 9:30 p.m. The vendor registration form can be downloaded at germantownfourthofjuly.weebly.com/vendors.html; the submission deadline is June 1.
