OBITUARIES: Hess, Tucker

Helga Hess (1941 – 2016)

RHINEBECK—Helga Hess, 75, of Elizaville passed away Wednesday, September 14, 2016 at the Baptist Nursing Home in Rhinebeck.

Born May 12, 1941 in Germany, she was the daughter of the late Waldemar and Klara (Fisher) Bartl.

She married Walter R. Hess, Sr., December 25, 1961 in New York City and he survives at home.

Through her life, Mrs. Hess was the picture of strength and perseverance. She came to the United States in 1961 from a war-torn Germany not speaking a word of English, and managed to create the life others wish for in the American dream. She raised two boys in the hustle and bustle of New York City until 1978 when she and her husband built a home in Elizaville and established a new business. Through heartbreaking tragedy and loss, energetic parties and weekends at the lake, Mrs. Hess was never short on strength, love, stories, yummy food and a lot of “da, da, das.” She will always lovingly be remembered as the tough German with a sharp tongue, big smile and heart filled with unending love for her family.

In addition to her loving husband of 55 years, she is survived by: her son, Harold Hess and his husband, James Pike of Mechanicsburg, PA; her granddaughter, Briana Calaman and her husband, Brian Calaman of Carlisle, PA; her great-grandson, Beckett Calaman and her sister, Christa Kainz of Hassfurt, Germany.

Mrs. Hess was predeceased by her son, Walter R. Hess, Jr.

Visitation and a memorial service will be held September 24, 2 p.m. at the Burnett & White Funeral Homes, 7461 South Broadway, Red Hook. The memorial service will begin at 3 p.m. Interment will follow at the Elizaville Methodist Cemetery, Elizaville.

Memorial donations may be made in her memory to the Caregiver Action Network.
