Jack Thomas Weir (1949 – 2017)
KINDERHOOK—Jack Thomas Weir, 68, of Kinderhook died Tuesday, January 17, 2017 at his home.
Born January 11, 1949 in Watervliet, he was the son of the late John and Felecia (Redd) Weir.
Mr. Weir was a graduate of Watervliet High School and a disabled Vietnam veteran who served in the U.S. Army. He was a federal meat inspector for the USDA and traveled throughout New York State. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed camping and gardening. He was also an artisan of carved walking sticks and wood burning plaques.
He is survived by: his wife, Dorene (Alund) Weir; a sister, Jean C. Mesick of Clifton Park; two brothers-in-law, Keith D. Alund and Bill F. Alund, both of Latham; one niece and three nephews.
Funeral services will be held Monday, January 23, 10 a.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Kinderhook, with the Reverend Tom Malionek officiating. Burial will follow in Saratoga National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Valatie Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 242, Valatie 12184 or a charity of one’s choice. Arrangements are with the Raymond E. Bond Funeral Home, 1015 Kinderhook Street, Valatie.
Henry E. Bender (1918 – 2017)
HUDSON—Henry “Hank” “Bud” Bender was born June 24, 1918 and died January 17, 2017.
He is finally at peace and with his Lord and beloved wife, Helen, after many years of discomfort. He was confined to a wheelchair the past few years, but as always, he rarely complained.
He was born and raised in Brooklyn, the son of Edith Hansen Bender and Edward Bender. He enjoyed spending his summers with his grandmother in Churchtown, when he turned 18 he moved upstate permanently. In 1942 he married Helen Theresa Arcuri and they were married for 58 years until her passing in 2000.
During World War II, Mr. Bender apprenticed at General Electric in Schenectady, moving on to V & O Press and ending his career as plant engineer at Universal Match in 1978.
His second career was a realtor, first working with his best bud, Erwin A. Schneider, then opening the family-owned business, Van Buren Properties, Inc. with his daughter and son-in-law until his retirement again in the late 90s.
He was well-known in the Columbia County business community and helped build Ghent Commerce Park where the main road is named after him.
Mr. Bender is survived by: his daughter Karen; granddaughter, Kari; son-in-law, Jack Van Buren and his great-granddog, Byron. He had a very large extended family, which includes many nieces, nephews and sisters-in-law, whom he loved equally and unequivocally. He is also survived by his many friends and caretakers at Whittier Adult Home where he lived for the past three years. He was predeceased by his parents, sister, Muriel; wife; numerous cousins, brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and close friends.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 21, 11 a.m. at the Raymond E. Bond Funeral Home, 1015 Kinderhook Street, Valatie. Friends and family may call at the funeral home, Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m. prior to the service. Burial will be immediately following at Cedar Park Cemetery in Hudson.
In lieu of flowers, contributions are requested to a local food pantry in his honor.
Stephen Brightly (1937 – 2017)
ELIZAVILLE—Stephen J. Brightly, 80, of Elizaville passed away at his home, January 16, 2017.
Born January 2, 1937, in Elizaville, he was the son of the late David A. and Mary E. (Svingana) Brightly.
He was a very hard-working man, loving and dedicated to his wife, Carol, who predeceased him April 2009.
Straight out of high school, Mr. Brightly joined the United States Air Force and upon his discharge, got a job with his father at Lane Construction. He was the supervisor of bridge construction from which he retired twice after 46 years. He built his own home and was very proud member of the Carpenters Union.
In addition to his beloved wife, Carol and his parents, he was predeceased by his son, Stevie Brightly; his sisters, Mary and Carolyn; and his brother, Dave.
Calling hours will be at the Burnett & White Funeral Home, 7461 South Broadway, Red Hook, Saturday, January 21, 2017 from noon to 2 p.m., followed by a memorial service with military honors at the funeral home at 2 p.m. Interment will be private.

Beatrice A. Broderick (1929 – 2017)
CHATHAM—Beatrice A. Broderick, 87, of Chatham passed away peacefully at home January 18, 2017.
She was the daughter of the late Leroy Janes, Sr., and Minnie (Kruse) Janes. She was predeceased by her husband, Charles J. Broderick; her daughter, Diane VanTassel and four brothers, Leroy, Jr., John, Allan and Edwin Janes.
She is survived by: three daughters, Louise (Harry) Munson of Stuyvesant, Karen (John) Raible of Deland, FL, Sandra Nadeau of Franklin, NH; a brother, Robert Janes of Gulfport, FL; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, whom she adored.
She attended Plattsburgh Teachers College and worked for many years at Barnwell Nursing Home in Valatie as a certified nursing assistant. She enjoyed taking care of the elderly and sick. Her kind, gentle and loving heart was felt by all who knew her. She loved being with her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed ice skating and seeing the Olympic skaters. She looked forward to the shows at the Mac-Haydn Theatre in Chatham each year. She will be missed by all who knew her and loved her.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, January 25, 11 a.m. at the St. John the Baptist Church, Route 9, Valatie, with the Reverend George Fleming officiating. Burial will follow in St. John the Baptist Cemetery, Valatie. Family and friends may call at the Raymond E. Bond Funeral Home, 1015 Kinderhook Street, Valatie, Tuesday, January 24 from 5 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Chatham Rescue Squad.
