HUDSON – City Mayor Tiffany Martin Hamilton and Hudson Police Commissioner Martha Harvey signed an order February 20 stating that “no resources, facilities or property of the City of Hudson that are ordinarily or generally in the use or control of the City of Hudson Police Department… shall be made available for use by agents, officers, or employees of United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (‘ICE’) except as may be required by law.”

The order specifically mentions rooms and desks that are controlled by the city’s Police Department, as well as “devices or facilities, vehicles, apparatus or other resources.”

The mayor told newsman Lance Wheeler that the order was signed in response to executive orders coming from the White House. She said over the last few weeks “at President Trump’s direction, ICE has been taking very sweeping measures” to interview and detain undocumented individuals.

She said in the video that Mr. Wheeler posted on Youtube that the Mr. Trump’s executive orders on immigration leave a lot of room for error and make the process very subjective. She also pointed out that it leaves members of the Hudson community without legal protections.

The new order she signed says, “in the event any resources, facilities, or property of the City of Hudson are used by or provided for the use of ICE… written notification of such use or provision to the Office of the Mayor, the Police Commissioner, and the Common Council, which notification shall also identify the provision of law under which such resource, facility or property was required to have been so used or provided.”

According to the Times Union, millions of people living in the United States illegally could be targeted for deportation under a sweeping rewrite of immigration enforcement policies announced Tuesday, February 21 by the Trump administration.

The story in the Times Union reports that memos signed by Homeland Security Department Secretary John Kelly say immigrants without proper documentation who are charged or convicted of any offense, or even suspected of a crime will now be an enforcement priority. The possible reasons that would allow ICE to detain immigrants include arrests for shoplifting or other minor offenses, or having crossed the border illegally.
