OBITUARY: Whitbeck

Lenore C. Whitbeck (1925 – 2017)

GHENT—Lenore C. (Laverack) Whitbeck, known as Bubbles to her close friends and family, passed away peacefully August 12, 2017 at 92.

She was predeceased by her husband, Harvey; daughter, Patrice and son, Luke.

Mrs. Whitbeck is survived by: her brother, Nick Laverack; her children, Harvey, Jan Rhiner, Denise, Stephen, Cynthia Hills, Paul and John; along with nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Her career started in 1945 as a stewardess for Eastern Airlines, serving notables in society such as Babe Ruth. She and her husband raised their nine children in Claverack.

Filling a need in the community and for their child, they were part of a small group that helped to found the Happy Days Pre-school, which provided education and inclusion for the mentally disabled.

She was a tireless advocate for the mentally disabled through her association with the pre-school, which later became Coarc, serving as president for the Board of Directors. She remained involved throughout her life.

In her mid-50s, Mrs. Whitbeck earned a degree in social work from Columbia-Greene Community College. She served on the Board of Managers for the Home for the Aged in Hudson.

She enjoyed reading, visiting museums and traveling in her RV, even going across the country.

She will be missed by all.
