Dinah L. Hoffman (1944 – 2018)
VALATIE—It is with great sadness that the family of Dinah Lee (Yates) Hoffman of Kinderhook announce her passing February 5, 2018.
She was born May 9, 1944 in Hudson to George and Bernice (Van Benschoten) Yates. She married Robert Richard Hoffman on September 2, 1961 at the West Ghent Reformed Church in Ghent.
They had two children, Thomas and Hollie, and raised their nephew, Robert “Pudge” Scraper.
At the time of her husband’s passing, the couple had been married for more than 48 years.
Mrs. Hoffman was employed as an aide at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson for about 30 years. She loved reading books, completing word search puzzles, and watching westerns on TV.
Mrs. Hoffman is survived by: her son, Thomas of Stottville; her daughter, Hollie De Kraai of Kinderhook; five grandchildren; her brothers, George, Jr., of Stuyvesant and Lloyd of Craryville; sisters, Lynn Miller of Hudson and Susie Woodin of Philmont; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her sisters, Peggy and Kim; and her nephew, Pudge.
Memorials may be made to Columbia-Greene Community Womens’ Softball, 4400 Route 23, Hudson 12534.
Funeral services will be private and held at a later date. Arrangements are with the Raymond E. Bond Funeral Home, 1015 Kinderhook Street, Valatie.
William A. Carbone (1941 – 2018)
VALATIE—William A. Carbone of Hudson, local artist and beloved resident of Columbia County for many years, passed away February 6, 2018 at the age of 76 after a brief but courageous battle with cancer.
A celebration of his life and work will take place in the near future.

William F. Smith (1952 – 2018)
ALBANY—William Frederick Smith, 65, of Chatham passed away peacefully the morning of Tuesday, February 6 at the Albany Stratton VA Medical Center with family at his bedside.
He was predeceased by his parents, Patricia Hall and David Hall as well as his sister, Patricia A. Hall.
Mr. Smith is survived by: his loving children, Nicholas Smith and his wife Stacy, Derek Smith, Crystal Coolidge and her husband Steven Coolidge and Brooke Smith; his grandchildren, whom he cherished and loved dearly, Mara, Lindsay, Justin, Peyton and Ellie; and his ex-wife, Pamela with whom he maintained a close friendship; his siblings, Maryanne Anderson, Katherine McCarthy, David Hall, Jr., and Norman Hall.
Services will be held privately.

Russell L. Alger (1941 – 2018)
HUDSON—Russell L. Alger, 76, of Ghent passed away February 9, 2018 at Columbia Memorial Hospital surrounded by his loving family.
He was born November 4, 1941 to Russell and Ruth Alger in Masonville.
He moved to Chatham, while working for Asplundh Tree Service. It was there he met and married the love of his life, Nancy Parlman. They were married for 37 years until her untimely passing in 2006.
Known for his carpentry and woodworking skills, Mr. Alger ran his own successful building company for many years. He built a beautiful craftsman home for his family and furnished it with furniture of his own craft.
He had a love of motor sports and hot rods. In his younger years, he raced motorcycles and eventually became a hotrodder and proud owner of a 1948 Ford. His greatest joy in life was his family and he cherished nothing more than family gatherings and cheering on his beloved grandchildren at their sporting events and activities. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed fishing with his grandchildren. He was known for his rapid-fire storytelling and infectious smile.
Mr. Alger was a life-member of the Ghent Sportsmens’ Association, Ghent Volunteer Fire Company, Ghent VFW Post 5933, Social Sons and IBEW.
He is survived by: his loving daughters and spouses, Teshia and Chris McMurray of Valatie, and Heidi and Christopher Brennan of Ghent; his cherished grandchildren, Grace, Aidan and Ethan Brennan; granddaughter, Lauren Hill; dear sisters, Judi (Dale) Lacey, Jayne (Tony) Soule and Janice Alger; many
other close relatives and friends; and beloved granddog and daily companion, Murphy.
He was predeceased by his wife, Nancy; his parents and brothers, Michael, Lawrence and Edgar Alger.
Family will receive friends Monday, February 12 at the French, Gifford, Preiter & Blasl Funeral Home, 25 Railroad Avenue, Chatham from 4 to 7 p.m. Services will be conducted Tuesday, February 13, 10 a.m. at the funeral home with burial immediately following at Ghent Union Cemetery.
