OBITUARIES: Nolan, Benton

Thomas Nolan, Jr. (1943 – 2018)

HUDSON—Thomas F. Nolan, Jr., 74, of Hudson died Tuesday, June 19, 2018 at his home.

Born November 20, 1943 in Albany, he was the son of the late Thomas F. and Marguerite (Maguire) Nolan, Sr.

Mr. Nolan was an Albany police officer for 27 years and retired as captain of Division 1. He also served the towns of Greenport and Copake as police commissioner. Later he became the owner and instructor for TFN Security Guard Training, a New York State Department of Criminal Justice Services Certified Training School. Of all of his achievements, the most important was the love and life that he shared with his late wife, Diane R. Nolan, and their family.

He is survived by: his four children, Patrick Nolan (Marla) of Philmont, Kathleen Nolan of Colorado Springs, CO, Stacey Nolan of Palmer Lake, CO, and Kevin Nolan (Sarah) of Hillsdale; 10 grandchildren, Nolan, Molly, Eric, Sarah, Evan, Max, Noelle, Bailey, Jameson and Harper; one great-grandson, Robert; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 26, 11 a.m. at the Raymond E. Bond Funeral Home, 1015 Kinderhook Street, Valatie, with Bill Baldwin officiating. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery, Valatie. Calling hours will be Monday, June 25 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Mary H. Benton (1929 – 2018)

HUDSON—Mary Houlihan Benton, 88, of Elizaville passed away June 22, 2018 at Columbia Memorial Hospital surrounded by her family.

She was born August 7, 1929 in Fox Harbour in the Dominion of Newfoundland. She was the eldest child of James and Laura (Foley) Houlihan.

Ms. Benton is survived by: her sons, Richard C. Benton of Texas, Bruce W. (Christine) Benton of Chatham and James Elmer (Linda) Benton of Livingston; grandchildren, April (Jon) Meredith, Heather (James) Casey, Megan Couse, Geoffrey J. (Ashley) Benton, Jessica Benton, Michelle Benton and Patrick Benton. She was also the beloved “GG” to 10 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her siblings, Helen (Henry) Springham, John (Eileen) Houlihan, Louise (the late Henry) Buttner, James (the late Mary) Houlihan, Elizabeth Houlihan Howard, Bernadette (the late Cyril) O’Reilly, Shirley (the late Gerard) Duke; sister-in-law, Joan Burger; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her parents and several siblings, Ms. Benton was predeceased by her partner, Walter J. Hercun.

Ms. Benton worked for 30 years in the Columbia County Treasurer’s Office, ending her career as deputy county treasurer. She was a communicant of the Holy Cross Church, and later Holy Trinity Parish in Columbia County, where she was a charter member of the parish council. After her retirement she was an avid volunteer at the former Adventist Nursing Home in Livingston.

Services for Ms. Benton will be held for at the Yadack-Fox Funeral Home, 209 Main Street, Germantown, Monday, June 25, 9:30 a.m. and 10 a.m. at the Church of the Resurrection in Germantown where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will follow at the Livingston Rural Cemetery.
