Russell L. Johnson (1936 – 2018)

VALATIE—Russell “Russ” Lee Johnson of Valatie went home to be with his Lord, July 22, 2018 at the age of 82.

He died peacefully in his sleep at home in Valatie.

He was born in Jersey City, NJ, June 19, 1936 to Florence Marie (Bach) and Paul Lee Johnson.

He was one of seven children. He graduated high school in Carle Place, Long Island. He graduated from Elim Bible Institute, majoring in biblical studies and minoring in missions. He later attended Robert’s Wesleyan College as well.

Mr. Johnson served many years as a U.S. Customs inspector. He was blessed to serve the Lord as a missionary in several locations but primarily in Kenya.

He is survived by: two sisters, Paulette Tuchyner and Gloria Palazzo; his wife of nearly 63 years, Catherine “Elaine” (Hanbury); son, William “Bill” (wife Debbie); daughter, Cheryl Lynn (husband Larry); daughter, Catharine Allison (husband Dale); son, Kevin Russell (wife Lisa Marie) and son, Jonathan David (wife Laura); 20 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three children, Malcom Bruce, Sean Michael and Rachel Elizabeth, all of whom died in infancy. A memorial service will be held to honor and celebrate his life at Rock Solid Church, 334 Union Street, Hudson, Saturday, July 28 at 3 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, checks may be made payable to the Rock Solid Church of Hudson (for Pastor Jeremiah/Kenya). Arrangements are with the Raymond E. Bond Funeral Home, 1015 Kinderhook Street, Valatie.

Joseph R. Izzo (1963 – 2018)

EAST CHATHAM—Joseph Robert Izzo passed away July 15, 2018 with his family by his side.

Born February 18, 1963 in Meriden, CT, he was the son of Robert J. Izzo and the late Joann (Mason) Izzo.

He is survived by: his son, Joseph C. Izzo of Niverville; his daughter, Morgan L. Izzo of East Chatham, his best friend and mother of his children, Brenda L. Izzo and his brother, Ron (Della) and sons of California.

Mr. Izzo was predeceased by his daughter, Shauna Izzo, and his brothers, Jay, Tony and Rick.

He was a man of many talents. He operated heavy equipment, drove tractor trailer, owned a restaurant and sold real estate. Most importantly he was a good man and a good father, not just to his own children but to the many friends of his children that called his house their home. Mr. Izzo had a beautiful heart—always willing to help anyone. He will be missed and remembered by many.

Join his family for a service to celebrate and honor Mr. Izzo’s life Saturday, August 4, 2 p.m. on the hill at Little Brook Farm, 548 County Route 13, Old Chatham.

Darryl T. Lasko (1955 – 2018)

GERMANTOWN—Darryl Thomas Lasko, 63, of Germantown passed away peacefully after a brief fight with cancer Tuesday, July 24, 2018. He was blessed to be at home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born April 5, 1955 in Poughkeepsie. He was a graduate of Arlington High School. He married Susan Ann Cahill, also an Arlington HS student, January 24, 1981 at Holy Trinity Church in Poughkeepsie. They enjoyed 37 amazing years of marriage and raised four children together.

Mr. Lasko worked as a warehouse specialist at Taconic Bio-Sciences in Germantown. Besides being a master tinkerer and “professional” commentator, he was previously a volunteer firefighter for the Rochdale Fire Department, a machinist for Alfa Laval, a warehouse manager for Arnoff Moving and Storage, grill master, and a longtime adult men’s softball player and bowler.

Always wanting to be a part of his children’s lives, he enjoyed multiple opportunities to coach their Little League teams, was a continuous supporter in all of their events, and was always their biggest fan no matter what. He was the MVP at finding lost things, loved camping and campfires, Sunday morning bacon and eggs, coffee, watching movies and “The Price is Right,” setting up Christmas lights, being a ninja, and never ending trips to Walmart.

Mr. Lasko had a great sense of humor, a strong will, a sensitive soul, and not to mention penmanship envied by all. He had a huge heart and would always pour out his love to anyone in need.

“It has been such an honor and great blessing to have him in all our lives and to have learned so much from him in the time we had.”

Mr. Lasko is survived by: his wife, Susan; his children, Daniel T. Lasko (Tiffany), Michelle M. Turner (Jason), Brandi L. Jornov (Craig), Darryl S. Lasko; five grandchildren, Jack, Tyler, Autumn, Mason, Eric and one on the way; his sister, Patricia Hughes (Lasko); his brothers, Dale Lasko, Brian Lasko; plus a very large loving extended family.

He was predeceased by his father, William J. Lasko, Sr.; his mother, Doris A. Lasko (Hanaburgh); his sister, Doreen Wells (Lasko); his brother, William Lasko, Jr.

A private family service will be held at the convenience of the family.

Rose DeJoy Ziemba (1925 – 2018)

HUDSON—Rose DeJoy Ziemba, 93, of Hudson, wife of the late Louis J. Ziemba, passed away Wednesday, July 25, 2018.

Born February 12, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Pietro and Rosalinda Cermola DiGioia DeJoy.

Mrs. Ziemba proudly served as a SPAR in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II and prior to her retirement, she worked as an operator at the New York Telephone Company for 25 years.

She is survived by: her sister, Inez Nabozny; three children: Kathryn (James) Heffernan of Scottsdale, AZ, Peter (Terry Siegel) Ziemba of Katonah and Neil (Vicki) Ziemba of Kneeland, CA; as well as seven grandchildren, Kyle, Troy, Brant, Jamie, Zack, Corey and Irene.

Mrs. Ziemba was predeceased by her son, Anthony Ziemba, and her daughter-in-law, Maureen Halton.

Calling hours are Sunday, July 29, 2018, 4 to 7 p.m. at the Bates & Anderson – Redmond & Keeler Funeral Home, 110 Green Street, Hudson.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Monday, July 30, 2018, 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church, 429 East Allen Street, Hudson.

Cynthia J. Hall (1946 – 2018)

CLAVERACK—Cynthia J. Hall, 72, beloved daughter, sister, aunt, teacher, political activist and friend, died Wednesday, July 25, 2018 in her home under the care of hospice and her loving sisters.

“Cyndy” was born in Lowell, MA, grew up in Glens Falls and graduated from Glens Falls High School in 1964. She earned a BS degree from Hartwick College and her MA in music education from the College of St. Rose. She dedicated her life to the overall improvement of education and to the value of music in schools and lives.

In 1972, the Hudson City School District hired Miss Hall, an enthusiastic, hard-working teacher who was teaching music in Kinderhook. Throughout her 37-year career, she creatively orchestrated hundreds of concerts, musicals and productions. Her students were her true passion. She helped each one develop their talent and appreciation for music and the world around them. A “Miss Hall” event was anticipated with pure joy and created wonderful memories for years to come. She was also deeply committed to the professional treatment of teachers and served as vice president of the Hudson Teacher’s Association, and chair of the Professional Standards Committee.

Miss Hall was always concerned about issues affecting the environment and people in the community she loved so dearly. Never one to sit back, she became a political activist and spent countless hours working on local, state and federal issues. She was chair of the Democratic Party in Columbia County and state representative for the State Democratic Committee. She proudly worked on the campaigns of Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Kirsten Gillibrand and Didi Barrett. Through her leadership, she has inspired young and old to engage in the issues of their community with compassion and respect.

She will be deeply missed by: her four sisters, Sue Richardson (Kevin) of Glens Falls, Sally Dolloff (Dana) of Jacksonville, FL, Heidi Bruce (David) of Altamont and Mary Woitach of Vestal; her dear friend, Dale Payson; her nine nieces and nephews, Meredith (Travis), Nicholas (Alyssa), Timothy, Paul (Meghan, Sadie, Millie), Lenore, Amanda, Devon, Cathy and Carolyn. Her sound advice, encouraging words, warm hugs and especially her endearing sense of humor will live on in their hearts forever.

The family extends a warm and heartfelt thank you to Miss Hall’s hospice team and “our new sister,” Murjana Issaka. There will be a memorial service at Bates & Anderson Redmond & Keeler Funeral Home, 110 Green Street, Hudson, Saturday, August 4 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to The Community Hospice of Columbia/Greene or Hudson Dollars for Scholars.

Linda G. Morgan (1947 – 2018)

HUDSON—Linda G. Morgan, 71, of Hudson passed away Wednesday, July 26, with her loving family by her side.

Born April 24, 1947 in Hudson, she was the daughter of Donald and Faye (Brandt) Nichols.

She was a devoted and caring wife, mother, grandmother and sister. Family was always her first priority, and she loved them all unconditionally.

Left to cherish her memory are: children, Ralph Vogel, III, Dawn Vogel, Donald Vogel, Jason Vogel and daughter-in-law, Jackie Vogel; several grandchildren; great-grandchildren; brothers; sisters; nieces and nephews. She will be forever remembered by her devoted companion, Rodney Stickles.

Funeral services from the Bates & Anderson-Redmond & Keeler Funeral Home, 110 Green Street, Hudson are Wednesday, August 1 at 1:30 p.m. Visitation time from noon to 1:30 p.m. will precede the funeral service. Interment will be in Cedar Park Cemetery.

Michael A. Brightly (1964 – 2018)

ALBANY—Michael A. Brightly, 53, a longtime resident of Elizaville, passed away unexpectedly Monday, July 23, 2018 at the Albany Medical Center.

Born September 6, 1964 in Rhinebeck, he was the son of the late Stephen J. and Carol (Lydon) Brightly.

An avid hunter, Mr. Brightly was a longtime gentleman farmer at his home in Elizaville. He also worked for more than 20 years at Red Hook Central School in Red Hook.

He is survived by: his loving fiancée, Ashleigh Hogan and her daughter Amy Riedel of Elizaville; his aunts and uncles, Charlene Goodrich of Germantown, Edward Lydon of Elizaville, Randy Lydon of Barrytown, David Lydon of Crescent City, FL, Susan Moul of Red Hook and Barbara Worth of Gainesville, FL; lifelong friend, John Shea; along with numerous cousins, extended family and friends.

In addition to his parents and extended family, his brother, Stephen Brightly, IV, predeceased him.

Friends may call at the Burnett & White Funeral Homes, 7461 South Broadway, Red Hook, Tuesday, July 31, 2018 from noon to 2 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Interment will follow at Elizaville Methodist Cemetery, Elizaville.

Julia R. Mathers (1941 – 2018)

SHARON, CT—Julia “Judy” R. Mathers, 77, a lifelong Millerton-area resident, died Wednesday, July 25, 2018 at Sharon Hospital.

Born June 24, 1941 in Hudson, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Marjorie (Sherman) Ostrander.

On March 15, 1958 in Ancramdale, she married Melvin W. Mathers. Mr. Mathers died April 24, 1994.

Mrs. Mathers enjoyed spending time with her loving family and especially loved spending time with her grandchildren at family get-togethers. She will be dearly missed by all.

Survivors include: her five children, Cathy Cooke and her husband Tom of Millerton, Julie Mathers of Claverack, William Mathers of Millbrook, Robert Mathers and his wife Christine of Ancram and Richard Mathers and his wife Kim of Millbrook; three brothers, David, Charles, Jr., and Richard Ostrander; two sisters, Marjorie Beaumont and Joy Rex; 10 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews and friends.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Mathers was also predeceased by her daughter, Roxanne Mathers McClelland and her brothers, Tim and Kenny Ostrander.

A graveside service will be held at the family’s discretion. In lieu of donations help a loved one quit smoking.
