KINDERHOOK–Former Ichabod Crane Superintendent Michael Vanyo is now the superintendent at the Berkshire Union Free School District in Canaan, according to the state Education Department.

Mr. Vanyo resigned from Ichabod Crane in June after two years in the district. In April 2019, he was arrested for a DWI and leaving the scene of a property damage incident in Saratoga County. He was on leave from the district until May, when board announced he would resign in June and that he was working remotely to help with the transition.

The Ichabod Crane board hired Mr. Vanyo in 2017. At the beginning of the 2018-19 school year, Mr. Vanyo was on medical leave from August until November after having suffered injuries from a fall while on vacation.

Before he came to Ichabod, he had been the superintendent at the Gloversville school district.

In his “separation agreement” with the Ichabod Crane District, Mr. Vanyo was paid a lump sum to end his contract and the district agreed to pay his health insurance until June of 2020, but the agreement does say that if Mr. Vanyo found employment with health insurance, he “will no longer be entitled to receive district-provided health insurance.”

Also in the agreement, there is a condition for references that the district “agrees to provide a neutral letter confirming the superintendent’s dates of service, positions held, and salary paid.” In the agreement Mr. Vanyo waived his rights to any hearing or appeal of his contract with district “concerning the matter.”

The Berkshire UFSD is part of the Berkshire Farm Center and Services of Youth, which offers several services in the state including foster homes, residential treatment center and community group homes. The school, which is a state public school, has grades 7th through 12th with a campus in Canaan and a campus on Warren Street in Hudson.
