Farmer killed when tractor, dump truck collide

GREENPORT—A farmer was killed when his tractor was hit by a dump truck at the intersection of State Route 9 and Yates Road, the afternoon of September 19.

Columbia County 911 dispatched State Police from the Livingston barracks to the two-vehicle crash at 2:04 p.m.

An investigation revealed than an International Harvester Farmall 1066 tractor operated by Stuart M. Meisner, 67, of Hudson was attempting to cross State Route 9 in a westerly direction from Yates Road. The tractor failed to yield the right of way and was struck by a southbound International Harvester dump truck on State Route 9.

Mr. Meisner was pronounced dead on the scene. He was the operator of Meisner’s Farm and Meisner’s Farm Stand in Greenport.

The Greenport Rescue Squad took the dump truck operator, Norman R. Stoddard, 72, of Hudson to Columbia Memorial Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Greenport firefighters, Greenport Police, Sheriff’s deputies, Columbia County Coroner Bernadette Powis, the County Fire Coordinator, the County Hazmat Team and the state Department of Environmental Conservation all responded to the scene.

This investigation remains ongoing.

Firefighters were clear from the scene at 6:28 p.m.
