GHENT—A Rensselaer County man was killed in a one-vehicle accident December 9 at 10:14 a.m.

Columbia County 911 dispatched sheriff’s deputies to County Route 21B, just north of Shufelt Road.

Their investigation determined that a 2013 Toyota Sienna operated by Rodney W. Abele, 76, of East Greenbush had been traveling north on County Route 21B when, for unknown reasons, the vehicle went off the east shoulder of the road and struck a tree head-on. After the impact, the vehicle continued down an embankment where it came to rest, according to a press release from Columbia County Sheriff David P. Bartlett.

Mr. Abele, who was alone in the vehicle, had to be extricated by Ghent and Chatham firefighters. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The accident is still under investigation by Sheriff’s deputies, investigators and Coroner Mike Blasl.

County Route 21B was closed for about two hours during the investigation.

Lieutenant Wayne Lopez told The Columbia Paper this week that it was raining at the time of the accident, but the road was not slippery. He said the coroner was looking into whether Mr. Abele may have had a medical condition that contributed to causing the accident.

The Chatham Rescue Squad, Ghent and Chatham fire departments assisted at the scene.

Investigating for the Sheriff’s Office were Sheriff David Bartlett, Undersheriff John Davi, Captain John DeRocha, Lieutenant Lopez, Investigator Reagan Anderson, Sergeants Brian Molinski and Jeffrey Hofstetter, and Deputy Jordan Brahm.
