K’hook mayor is only contest in 4 villages

GHENT—The four villages in the county will hold elections on Tuesday, March 15. In three of the villages there are trustee openings and all the candidates are running unopposed. In Kinderhook, the only village with a mayoral race, there are three people running for mayor.

Voters can write-in candidates on election day and on absentee ballots.

Village races

•In Chatham, the only village where the elections are run by the county Board of Elections, current Village Trustee Melony Spock, is running for reelection along with newcomer Karyn Schassler. Both are running on the Chatham Works Together ballot line and the both trustee terms are for two years. Ms. Spock was first elected to the board in 2019 for a one-year term and then for a full two-year term in 2020.

Voting will take place in the Tracy Memorial Village Hall, 77 Main Street, from noon to 9 p.m. Information on voting is on the village website at villageofchatham.com and the county Board of Elections website at www.columbiacountyny.com

•In Kinderhook, current Village Trustee Michael Abrams is running for mayor against Barry Knights and Quinn Murphy. The mayor is elected to a two-year term. Two of the candidates have websites – Mr. Abrams website is at mikeforkinderhook.com and Mr. Murphy’s website is at murphy4mayor.com

Besides mayor, there are two trustee seats on the ballot. Incumbent Trustee Dorene Weir is running for reelection and Susan Patterson is running for an open seat. Both seats are two-year terms.

Elections will be held at the Village Hall, 6 Chatham Street, and polls will be open from noon to 9 p.m.

According to a notice from the village, March 4 was the last day for individuals to register to vote in the village elections with the County Board of Elections. Kinderhook held an in-person registration day at the Village Hall on March 5.

The notice also says that “new residents who previously lived outside the village who have not completed a change of address are required to register with the village to be eligible to vote in the upcoming election.”

March 8 was the last day for the village clerk to receive applications for absentee ballots that need to be mailed to qualified voters but March 14 is the last day for in-person applications for absentee ballots. •In Philmont, there are two trustee seats on the ballot. Incumbents Debra Gitterman, the Philmont Neighbors party, and Douglas C. Cropper, the Village Party, are running for reelection to two-year terms. Also on the ballot is Carla Ingersoll (Philmont Party) for village justice, a four-year term.

In 2020, Ms. Gitterman won a seat on the board as a write-in candidate.

Voting in Philmont will be held at the Village Meeting Hall, 124 Main Street. Polls are open noon to 9 p.m. According to the village website, absentee ballots are available through the Village Office, also at 124 Main Street. Ballot request deadline is March 14 for pickup and Covid-19 is a qualified reason for voting absentee ballot again this year. Absentee ballots must be received by March 15. •In Valatie, two people are running for two open trustee seats. Incumbent Angelo Nero and newcomer Patrick Rogers are running for two-year terms. Polls will be open from noon to 9 p.m. in the Martin H. Glynn Municipal Building, 3211 Church Street.The village website is www.valatievillage.com
