Pierogi sale benefits Ukrainian government

March 19 and 20 was the 3rd weekend of pierogi sales at the St. Michael’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church at 59 Partition Street, Hudson. All money raised goes directly to the Ukrainian Government in Kyiv through the National Bank of Ukraine. So far the church has sent about $9,000. The volunteers have worked in concert with the Saint Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church located around the corner at 206 Union Street, which held a bake sale on Sunday selling pastries, sweets and cookies. “We are grateful to the Columbia County community and Hudsonians,” said one of the organizers, Iryna Johnson. “We did not expect so many people and were short of inventory, but people were patient, standing in line and sometimes settled for one dozen pirogies instead of their order of three.” The sale will be conducted next weekend as well, on Saturday and Sunday from noon to 3 p.m. Pictured is Sophia Gyla taking the pierogies out of the boiling pot.
