COPAKE–Unless town officials make significant spending cuts or find some revenue soon, the town will have to borrow $160,000 to cover its bills for the rest of the year.
Copake’s Accountant Brian Fitzgerald delivered that news to the Town Board at a special meeting to discuss budget issues Tuesday, June 23.
HUDSON—The Columbia County Office for the Aging has received a $10,000 grant to provide home maintenance, repair, and outside chores for low-income senior homeowners.
Senator Steve Saland (R-41st) secured the grant for the program, which is designed to help those without available family supports and sufficient resources to complete important tasks associated with home ownership.

CHATHAM—Local artist Melissa Sarris has asked Village Board members for permission to float “environmental sculptures” on Old Pond. She discussed her proposal with trustees at the Water and Sewer meeting Thursday, June 25.
The board also discussed the possible purchase of a sludge processing machine for the village, which would process sewage. Trustee George Grant and village employees visited the community of Bainbridge in Chenango County, to see the sludge machine at work. Mr. Grant said that it was a fairly new technology, but that it would be “smaller, more efficient then a sludge processor.” The new machine would cost between $150,000 and $160,000. No decision of whether or not to purchase the equipment was made at the meeting.
HUDSON—Any Columbia County resident who wants a copy of their deed can get it from the County Clerk’s Office, usually for less that $10, and should steer clear of a recent letter offer.
Several county residents contacted the County Clerk’s Office after receiving an unsolicited letter in the mail from New York Record Retrieval, Inc., offering to sell a certified copy of their deeds for the “low” price of $59.50 each, according to a press release from County Clerk Holly Tanner.

ANCRAM–The first day of summer rolled around earlier this week, which means winter is only six months away.
The temperature was in the 20s on a sunny Saturday morning in January 2008 when Town Supervisor Thomas Dias called an emergency meeting of the Town Board at the town highway garage to show the public the poor conditions the Highway Department had been working under for years. His stated goal at that time was not to allow the highway crew to go through another winter with no heated place to work on plow trucks when they broke down.
