Clyde Moore, 88, life member of the W. Ghent Fire Co.

ALBANY–Clyde W. Moore, 88, of Claverack, died Friday, November 6, 2009 at Albany Medical Center. 

Born January 21, 1921 in Hudson, he was the son of the late Claude and Ruth (Spoor) Moore.

Mr. Moore was employed by the Town of Claverack and also owned and operated a dairy farm with his father.

He was a life member of the West Ghent Fire Company and its treasurer for over 25 years, and a member of the West Ghent Reformed Church.

Surviving are his son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Linda Fleming of Oakland, N.J.; two grandsons and their wives, Mark and Whitney Fleming of Pittsburgh, Penn., and Seth and Nicole Fleming of Carmel, Ind.; his grand-daughter, Sara Fleming of Oakland, N.J.; five great-grandchildren; his niece, Carol Snyder of Ghent; his nephew, Donald Gardner of Crossville, Tenn., and five grandnieces and one grandnephew.

His beloved wife, Florence Jane Fleming Moore, and his sister, Marion Gardner, died previously.

Visiting hours are 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Bates & Anderson – Redmond & Keeler Funeral Home, 110 Green Street, Hudson.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Cedar Park Cemetery in Hudson.

Charles Coons, 68, Air Force veteran

HUDSON–Charles W. Coons, 68, died Thursday, November 5, 2009 at Columbia Memorial Hospital.

Born January 30, 1941 in Hudson, he was the son of the late Cecil and Margaret (Hamm) Coons.

Mr. Coons worked for the Hopanos Apartment Complex in Catskill in the maintenance department.

He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1961 until 1965.

Mr. Coons was an avid hunter and a member of Brady’s Volunteer Fire Department in Athens.

Surviving are his wife, Sandra (Dumary) Coons of Athens; his son, Robert Coons of Athens; two daughters, Christine Felix of Florida and Charlene Asbury of Texas; his step-father, Edward Wagner of Stottville; eight grand-children, Andy Felix and Mel Felix, both of Fla., Peter Bangs of New York City, Carl Ditto, Justin Asbury, Victoria Ditto, and Keltie Asbury, all of Texas, and Anna Coons of Athens; his sister, Judy French of Chatham; his brother, Gerald Coons of New York City; one great-grandchild, Nathan Felix of Fla., and several nieces and nephews.

One great-grandchild, Anthony James Felix, died previously.

Services are private and at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are with the Bates & Anderson – Redmond & Keeler Funeral Home in Hudson.

 

 

 

Theresa Sharpe, 82, enjoyed spending time with her family

HUDSON–Theresa Irene Sharpe, 82, of West Ghent, died Friday, November 6, 2009 at Columbia Memorial Hospital.

Born October 14, 1927 in Binghamton, she was the daughter of the late Howard and Virginia Strickland.

Mrs. Sharpe was a homemaker and enjoyed spending time with her family.

Mrs. Sharpe is survived by seven children, Linda Houser of Wynantskill, Frederick Eggleston, Jr. (Kathy) of West Ghent, Tommy Eggleston of Taghkanic, Rodney Eggleston (Joyce) of Ghent, Robert Eggleston (Phyllis) of Stuyvesant Falls, David Eggleston (Cheryl) of Middleton, Idaho, and Ralph Sharpe of West Ghent; two brothers, James and Robert Strickland, both of Binghamton; 14 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Her husband, Lewis Sharpe, her daughter Bonnie Sharpe, two sisters, Virginia Hanes and Marion Strickland, and two brothers, Richard and Harold Strickland, died previously.

Visiting hours are 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Bates & Anderson – Redmond & Keeler Funeral Home.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in the West Ghent Cemetery.

Mildred Hermans, 90, was employed by Social Services department

PHILMONT–Mildred E. Hermans, 90, of Copake, died Wednesday November 4, 2009 at the Pine Haven Home.

She was born on October 16, 1919 in Hudson, a daughter of the late Ralph and Alice (Waltermire) Studley.

Mrs. Hermans was a graduate of the New York State Teachers College in Albany and had been employed for many years as a supervisor for adult services by the Columbia County Department of Social Services.

She was a longtime member of the Copake United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women, where she held various offices. She was also a member of the Cobbletones singing group.

On December 24, 1943 in Claverack, she married H. Grant Hermans who died last year. A daughter, Muriel Moschkau, and two sisters, Velma Forgham and Evelyn Lyman also died previously.

Survivors include her daughter Mary Guntert of Copake and sons Grant Hermans of Copake Falls and Charles Hermans of Millerton. She also leaves her grandchildren, Sandra Kellstrom, Deborah Anderton, Scott Moschkau, Richard Moschkau, Matthew Moschkau and Jasmin Smith, along with eight great grandchildren. Additionally, her siblings Nancy Berninger of Ghent,  Edna Coon of Rochester, Barbara Meltz of Stottville, Carol Spath of Walkill and Albert Studley of New Jersey survive. 

Funeral services will be held Saturday November 7, at 11 a.m. from the Copake United Methodist Church.

Friends are invited and may call Friday November 6, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Peck and Peck Funeral Home, 8063 State Route 22 in Copake.

Burial will follow the services in the Copake Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be offered to the Copake United Methodist Church, Copake, NY  12516.

Alfred “Sonny” McCagg Jr., enjoyed his work, camp, breakfasts with friends

W.GHENT–Alfred “Sonny” L. McCagg, Jr., 70, entered into eternal rest suddenly on Saturday, October 31, 2009.

Born August 21, 1939 in Hudson, he was the son of the late Alfred L. McCagg and Mary (Pearson) McCagg.

Mr. McCagg was well known to this area. He previously worked for the Taconic Telephone Company before becoming the owner and operator of Al McCagg, Jr. Excavation. He was presently employed by McCagg Excavating, Inc. and was president of the company.

He was a member of the Hook Boat Club, the Ghent Rod and Gun Club, and the West Ghent Cemetery Committee.

The family enjoyed having a summer home at the Hook Boat Club for several years.

Mr. McCagg enjoyed his work, his camp and sharing breakfast with his friends at local diners.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara (Bartholomew) McCagg of West Ghent; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Michael McCagg and Jamie and Johanna McCagg, all of West Ghent ; his daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen (McCagg) Link and Robert Link of South Cairo; his brother and sister-in-law, Joseph and Linda McCagg of Stockport; four grandchildren, Austin and DerekMcCagg of West Ghent and Krystina and Samantha McCagg of Colonie, and several nieces and nephews.

His brother Robert McCagg died previously.

Visiting hours are 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today, Tuesday, at the Bates & AndersonRedmond & Keeler Funeral Home, 110 Green Street, Hudson.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in the West Ghent Cemetery.
