Jordan faces challenge from Nelson in state Senate race

GHENT—Republican incumbent Daphne Jordan is running for reelection in the 43rd state Senate District against Democrat Patrick Nelson.

The 43rd District covers all of Columbia County, and well as parts of Rensselaer, Saratoga, and Washington Counties. State senators are elected for two years.

As of February 21 of this year there were 220,414 voters in the whole district, the majority of them in Rensselaer and Saratoga counties. Democrats hold a slight lead over Republicans district wide, but there are more than 15,000 registered Independence Party members in the district. Ms. Jordan has the endorsement of the Independence Party. But the largest bloc of voters after those in the two major parties is made up of eligible voters who have selected no party affiliation. CLC wins Chamber’s Crystal Apple Award

CHATHAM–The Columbia Land Conservancy has won the Columbia County Chamber of Commerce Crystal Apple Award. The annual award is presented to a Chamber member business to recognize an extraordinary contribution to economic progress, community improvement, and the quality of life in Columbia County over the previous year.

The award was announced at 24th annual Crystal Apple Award Gala, Friday, March 22 at Columbia Golf & Country Club in Claverack. The conservancy was chosen by Chamber members from among six final nominees.

Local apple spirits business takes root

GHENT–Bottles of Core Vodka, apple and pear brandies and applejack are flying off the shelves at Harvest Spirits, as people line up each weekend to sample and purchase the farm’s distilled spirits to give as holiday gifts. The main worry of Derek Grout, founder of the two-year-old business is whether he’ll have enough of his products to last through the holiday season.

“Sales are so brisk that I’m looking forward to a break,” Mr. Grout said last week. And this week when a New York Times article about the company’s products runs, they’ll may have exactly the sort of problem a two-year-old business dreams about. Read more…

Aroma of fresh bread returns to Chatham corner

CHATHAM — The wood-frame building under construction on Route 66/Hudson Avenue near the intersection with Route 203/Church Street is a new bakery and café being built by the owner of the bakery in the village, Our Daily Bread. Last week the crew from A and D Construction connected the shell of the new bakery to the existing house next door, where the café will be.

Zvi Cohen is the owner of Our Daily Bread on the roundabout at the intersection of Main and Kinderhook Streets Village. He also owns Destino, the restaurant at the corner of Routes 203 and 66 adjacent to the new bakery. Before Mr. Cohen bought the corner building and opened Destino, that building was a bakery and restaurant. Read more…
