HUDSON—After meeting with Columbia County Board of Supervisors Chairman Art Baer (R-Hillsdale) Monday, June 22, the Chamber of Commerce has adopted motions opposing the county’s plan to lease the St. Charles Hotel for emergency housing of homeless people and calling on supervisors to withdraw the plan.
Also on Monday, city officials proposed that the county use the empty former Charles Williams School on north Second Street as a temporary housing facility.
COPAKE–The Town Board agreed to shell out $1,000 in the hope of saving a bundle in energy costs and doing its part to become more environmentally friendly over the coming years.
The energy-cost-saving proposal at hand was the installation of solar panels on the Town Hall roof. Carlos Newcomb, a project manager with Hudson Valley Clean Energy (HVCE), explained the project details to the Town Board and the public at the board’s meeting the morning of Saturday, June 13.
TAGHKANIC–“There is to be no work performed whatsoever on the motorcycle/sporting track. Any collateral consequences to defendant Wilzig are a result of his own actions undertaken prior to the current proceeding,” state Supreme Court Justice Patrick McGrath wrote in a June 5 letter to clarify the meaning of an injunction against use of the track issued on June 1.
The temporary injunction against Alan Wilzig that prevents him from using, maintaining or completing the paving of his motorcycle track was strengthened last week when the Granger Group, a local organization formed to oppose the construction of the mile-long track, successfully raised $50,000 to pursue the case. The money is for an “undertaking,” a bond required by the court to keep the injunction in force while Judge McGrath makes his final rulings on the merits of the case.
CHATHAM–The Village Board will issue a request for bids on repair to the firehouse. The project includes repairs to the roof and doors.
At the board’s regular meeting Thursday, June 11, members also discussed issues that have arisen in connection with the state Department of Transportation sewer and road project in the village, which is still set to conclude in this fall.
“This is a big nut, but it’s a long time coming,” Fire Chief John Howe said of the work on the firehouse. All board members agreed that the roof is in need of repair and that the doors need to be fixed and secured. Trustee David Chapman noted that the firehouse is 40 years old. “It’s time for maintenance like that,” he said.
COPAKE—Community Days events fill up a whole weekend Saturday and Sunday June 20 and 21.
Saturday starts off bright and early with a 5K race and one-mile run for kids. Race registration takes place at the Town Hall on Mountain View Road at 7:30 a.m.
Both races begin at the Town Hall—the one-mile at 8:30 a.m. and the 5K at 9:30 a.m.
Copake Memorial Park opens at noon with events that include a variety of vendors, Kidz on the Go and a Bounce House.
